State Communication Association Drama Units and Activities
-
The Arkansas State Communication Association (ASCA) is a professional organization made up of high school and college
speech and drama teachers. It is the goal of this organization to provide
assistance to Arkansas teachers who will be teaching a course in drama.
You will find two things in this section of our WWW homepage that we hope
you will find useful. First, there are six different units of study
outlined that could be incorporated into a drama class. You are to use
these areas as a menu. Select from those units any combination you
find appealing. Each area offers the opportunity to develop drama skills.
The length of the units may vary depending on your knowledge and the student's
interest.

Deep
In The Bush, Where People Rarely Ever Go
-
The stories used in this lesson were
collected by the author while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia,
West Africa. He lived in Zwedru, a town surrounded by the rainforest,
or "the bush" as the Liberians called it. These tales have
been kid - tested and approved with students of all ages from around the
world. These stories, and any other African tales, work as a great
introduction to the wealth of culture and history that Africa has to offer. Also
check out Peter Martin's Hammurabi,
the Priest King website - the dilemmas can be used as interesting
kick off points for Drama...

pages about GCSE Drama

I'm a Drama teacher at Bishop Vaughan
School
in Swansea in South West Wales (UK). For the past few years I've given
my students notes to help them in their preparation for the GCSE and A
Level Drama examinations, and it occurred to me, with the advent of the
Internet, that these notes may well prove useful to others outside my own
school. I make them available to you in no official capacity whatsoever.
If you find them useful, great! If you find them useless, so be it! Either
way, or if you have any suggestions or comments, please drop me an email
to denise@bradsweb.co.uk
Digital

-
In joining the name of Shakespeare

course aims to raise questions about the roles of various technologies,
"new" and "old," in the reproduction of "Shakespeare" as a cultural authority.

DRAMA
GAMES AND WARM-UP EXERCISES
- These games are invaluable preparation for
the skills and involvement required by the role plays. We strongly recommend
using these prior to the role plays. There are many other warm-up activities
you could use - these are just suggestions.
Drama
Games
- These are the most commonly played games in
the Galt Collegiate Institute Drama Club. Some games are more advanced
than others and those games are played closer to the end of the school year.
Reading the suggestion box at the end can be very helpful, and make the
scene more humorous.

Feldenkrais - Awareness through Movement
-
Applications
in Performing Arts - We are moved by a wonderful
performance, meaning that our spirits are touched, moved, changed by what
we have experienced. Great performances do move us with the emotional interaction
between artist and audience. But in a more literal sense, they also move
us physically through the precision and artistry of the actual movements
of the artist's body. For example, it is the quality of touch and movement
that a master musician uses that brings forth a beautiful sound from an
instrument. The FELDENKRAIS METHOD® provides us with an excellent tool
for developing this artistry of movement and expressiveness in all performers,
not just in those with special talents.
-
Applications
in the Classroom -"Not
exercise, not drama, not games, but the natural movement teachers often
attempt to inhibit in their students can be channelled into productive
movement-based activities to teach problem-solving and critical thinking.
Learning movement and using movement for learning needn’t be restricted
to early childhood, but can be applied to students of all ages. However,
the sophistication and challenges of the movement needs to increase as
the student matures. Through simple, effortless Feldenkrais® movement
lessons, participants will discover both physical and mental benefits of
what Howard Gardner calls bodily kinaesthetic intelligence."
-
FELDENKRAIS®
for Actors: Alan Questel interviewed by Tommie St. Cyr , an Assistant
Professor of Movement, Voice and Acting. She has taught movement to the
students in the University of Utah's Actor Training Program for over 5
years.

How
to Critique a Play - Theatre Reviews
- by Barbara Bishop Students use
the Play Review Checklist found at the first Trackstar Link as they
read the on-line theatre reviews found at the other URLs listed at this Trackstar.
Students read the review and then use the checklist to see how thorough the
review was. It is best if students read reviews of plays with which they are
familiar. Teachers may want to assign only some of the reviews listed here
if time restricts or if students are not familiar with all plays. The
checklist contains a rubric which the teacher might want to use as a way to
grade students as they write their own reviews of plays.

Sets Play Production-This is an overview course in technical
theatre and drama. As a part of the stagecraft unit, students are expected
to utilize practical skills in measuring, drawing scale models, and
constructing scale set models of a play to be performed during the current
year. What they learn is then carried over into the actual construction of a
stage set. This enables the student to recognize the value and difficulty of
the technical side of a production. It also helps encourage students to
consider a career on the opposite side of the curtain. This unit is found in
the Content Standards and Learning Expectations of the Tennessee Curriculum Frameworks: Drama Content Standard: Level VI. The learner will understand and
use processes, techniques, and materials of technical theatre
- Theatre
History Drama I - Students should develop an awareness of theatre
heritage and survey theatre and dramatic conventions throughout history.
This internet unit will allow students to research the different eras of
Theatre History. Once research has been completed, student groups will

minute multimedia presentation. This unit addresses the following Content
Standards and Learning Expectations of the Tennessee Curriculum Frameworks:
Drama Content Standard: Level II. The student will develop an awareness of
theatre heritage; Level III. The student will explore theatre heritage and
history; Level IV. The student will survey theatre and dramatic conventions
throughout history

those students and provides creative means for exploring their imaginations.

develop the means of expression for the individual through the use of
drama/theatre experience. In addition, the student will identify and respond
to various sensory stimuli.
