CLELAND

These are the Kilsyth families of Arnbrae and Brae, representing about 70% of all CLELANDS from Kilsyth. I hope to finish all CLELANDS later.

This tree is provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices. In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. There appears to be a family of CLELANDs from Campsie Parish moving into Kilsyth around 1620. It is likely that the Kilsyth CLELANDs descend from these. In 1649, the parish of Campsie was reduced to its present dimensions by the annexation of its eastern extremity to Kilsyth, which now forms its Eastern boundary. There are few earlier records for Campsie, and just a couple of CLELANDS in later records. It is likely that the CLELANDS moved in and occupied the Campsie land near the border of old Kilsyth, later to become part of Kilsyth. They may even have used the Kilsyth church as more convenient than the Campsie church.

The likely family is in Monkland, Lanarkshire - see Monkland

The original Old Monkland church, referred to locally as "The Auld Grey Kirk on the Hill" was originally built in 1640, and stands on a hill overlooking the Lanarkshire village of Glanmavis, just over 10 Km South of Kilsyth. It lies South of the outlying Dumbarton parishes of Kirkintilloch and Cumbernauld which are the Southern Borders of Kilsyth. There may have been a family connection of the Monkland CLELANDS to the Kilsyth/Campsie CLELANDS prompting them to travel to Kilsyth for baptisms and marriages.

(I feel we may find that the Alexander in Arnbrae and in Burnfoot are the same person. The two localities may have been main residence for farming and winter quarters for quarrying and used the nearer Kirkintillock church on occasions Or they are the same lcality with two names. If Janet (1724) is most likely a late child of Alexander snr he seems to have been quarrying at his residence Burnfoot then in 1724 while his son Alexander Jnr is now the tennant in Arnbrae. - Ken STEWART)
