THE FIRST HONEYS

My confirmed Honey line begins on another file - see HoneySecond These are the early estimates of the tree and still need to be properly confirmed.

This tree is provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices. In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have. Many additional details have been provided by other researchers and where possible I have included the contributor's email addresses within the file next to their families, however there are countless others also involved. I am willing to also add you in to your HONEY family. My thanks to you all.                      Ken STEWART < kjstew@iinet.net.au > 2003

ABBREVIATIONS USED

Other than the standard abbreviations and Chapman County codes I also use

(OPR) to show I extracted the data myself from the parish registers on microfilm, or have been given the full details. Specifically (OPR-OPC) is extracted register materials from the Online Parish Clerk

(IGI reg) to designate source of IGI materials with "registers" source codes

(IGI or IGI patron) to show IGI materials with another source (not always reliable)

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

A POSSIBLE PRE-HISTORY

I am still working on this analysis

There are numerous families of HONEY on the Northern Parishes of Cornwall - as indicated by register entries from the IGI

Morwenstow (3), Kilkhampton (25), Poughill (0), Stratton (51), Launcells (1), Marhamchurch (5), Poundstock (4), Jacobstow (30), Week St Mary (12), Whitstone (29), North Tamerton () and Boyton (12)

Many of these are dated into the 1600's and some even earlier

Some 10 km to the south of South Petherwin and Lewannick, there is also a massive HONEY family in St Cleer (61), and in the surrounding parishes of St Neot (5), Liskeard (5), Menheniot (38), St Ive (), Linkinhorne (), North Hill () and Quethiock ().

Out to the West of Launceston all the parishes seem to have a smattering of Honey families. Few have large numbers so are probably "seeded" from one of the bigger early families. One family from St Gennys have migrated to Ontario, Canada

Further into central Cornwall another large collection of families are centred around St Stephen in Brannell (65), with smaller numbers around in Roche (2), St Mewan (5), St Austell (4),

Southern Cornwall also has its smattering of families. Redruth has a large colony but this may be part of the mining community that has existed there for many centuries.

The South Petherwin & Lewannick family appears to have been located there from around 1700. They seem to be a rural family - agricultural labourers, yeomen and farmers. There is a possible family of Samuel HONEY and Elizabeth of Jacobstow who may be the parents of William bp. 1684

From the attached you will see that William Hony married Selina Byam who was descended from the Earls of Oxford and Essex. William was Vicar of Liskeard and it would be fascinating to know how they met. Her parents were, as you can imagine, very well connected and Gainsborough painted his largest area of canvas of the family. H.C.Hony presented it to the Public School, Marlborough College, where he was educated, and the college recently sold it for £10 million. Yes, on that side of the family there was considerable wealth. My people were humble farmers in the St Cleer area. The brothers, John and Nicholas, founded a school in St Germans, near Saltash, both having inherited £60 from their father, a considerable sum in those days.   (This and further trees below from Vivian HONY < viv.hony@virgin.net >)

Marriages at Bodmin, ... and on the same day, Mr. William Honey, of Lanivet, to Miss Ann Rowe, of the same parish

The West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser, Friday 3 Jul 1840

RICHARD HONEY, 19 - was charged with having stolen 12 gallons of barley, the property of Samuel WARDEN, his master, of Endellion, and JOHN SKINNER, 50, of Port Isaac, was charged with having received the same, knowing it to have been stolen. It appeared from the statement of the advocate, which was borne out by evidence that in February last, Skinner had a gun which he offered for sale to the other prisoner, Honey; and on the latter telling him that he had no money to purchase it, Skinner said there is plenty of barley at home in your master's granary; I will take it up in barley as well as in anything else. On one Sunday evening, Honey, when his master's family were at chapel, and his master in the house, went into the granary and stole the barley in question. He then got his master's horse, and put the bag on it, taking with him a boy named STEER, a fellow servant, and proceeded to the premises of the other prisoner. When he reached there, he placed the barley in the garden, and then went round to Skinner's front door, and went into the house. Skinner afterwards went up stairs, and the witness heard a door that led into the garden creak; and on Skinner's return he brought with him a bag which he handed to Honey. There was other evidence which fully established the guilt of both parties; and the jury found them Guilty.

CORONERS_ INQUESTS  -  On Monday last, an inquest was held by MR. GILBERT HAMLEY, deputy coroner, in the parish of St. Keyne, on view of the body of RICHARD HONEY.  It appeared from the evidence that the father of the poor little fellow saw him crossing a rivulet to get over to where he was

working; he stooped down to pick up some corn, and then lost sight of him.

He immediately went in search of his child with a neighbour, and some time after found him drowned in he river, about a quarter of a mile below where he saw him trying to cross.  It was supposed that the child, who was only 4 years old, was picking some sticks in the river, as several were found in his apron, and losing his balance, fell into the water.  Verdict - accidentally drowned.
