FAMILIES from the VARIOUS COUNTIES                                                      LEI

LEICESTERSHIRE

This is a KITTO family, although the spelling transforms into KETTOW and then CATO in Leicestershire. They are recorded in the 1841 and 1851 census as KITTO, but children are registered as CATO. This family comes from the research of Mike NICHOLLS JiMi@nich66.fsnet.co.uk

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

(1) William KETTOW  b. 29 May 1784 place unknown (from adult bp. entry) bp. 25 Dec 1843 St Marys Catholic, Loughborough, Lei, Eng. (s/o William & Catherine, OPR-M.Nicholls - possibly of Truro) m. 31 Jan 1820 All Saints C of E, Loughborough, Lei, Eng. (OPR-M.Nicholls) d. 21 Apr 1850 at Dead Lane, Loughborough, Lei, Eng. (as KETTO, D.cert-M.Nicholls & Q2 1850 #15/97 Loughbro) aged 67 years, occ: weaver, signed up (aged 13 years) in the 16th Reg of Foot on 23 Oct 1797, transferred to 34th Reg of Foot in 24 Oct 1799, served Cape Town, to India Nov 1802 for 14 years, service terminated at Vellore, Madras in Autumn 1816, Albany Barracks on IOW for 2 months, Chelsea Outpensioner Aug 1818, returned () to Loughborough, framework knitter (55) of Dead Lane Loughborough in 1841, Chelsea Pensioner of 34th Foot died in 1850.

(NOTES: the 16th Foot had been decimated in an insurgency in Jamaica in about 1795, so in 1797 a special order was given to it to make up its numbers in the UK by recruiting boys, obviously a last ditch measure, but Napoleonic war was in the wind, ref: Mike NICHOLLS)

I did know of the small Cato group in Blaby. I researched them in detail but could find no links to my own family. Cato is a name in its own right, although the origins are not really known. It was of course (also) a Roman name, and that of a famous censor 2000 years ago. Strangely most of the Catos in England had homes around 1800AD very close to one of our most famous Roman towns, now St Albans, where the local visitor centre has on its menu "Cato's soup", supposedly a recipe from the Roman's cook book.
