JOHN KITTO of
This tree is provided to
family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my KITTO family
trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as
the best fit from available choices. In
this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can
give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in
this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link
modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common
ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in
gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the
true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have.

July 1895 P. 47 WEDDING AT MILLER'S FLAT Dear Emmeline, — A most
enjoyable wedding party was held here the other day in celebration of the
wedding of the eldest daughter of Mr R. Kitto to Mr E. T. Kitto. The ceremony
was performed at the residence of the bride's parents. As the guests,
numbering about 20, arrived they were cordially welcomed by Mr and Mrs K.
Kitto. After the ceremony, which was performed by the Rev. W. G. Port, all
adjourned to the dining room, where ample justice was done to the good things
provided. The room was then cleared, and the afternoon spent in singing and
musical selections, etc. The bride was dressed in grey crepon trimmed with
silk and cream lace, and wore the usual orange blossom. She also wore a beautiful
gold bar brooch, the gift of the bridegroom. The bridesmaid (Miss M. Kitto
sister of the bride) wore a grey dress trimmed with mauve silk. Mr Francis
Kitto, brother of the bridegroom, acted as best man. The bride received about
40 presents, both handsome and costly, but it would take too much space to
particularise. At about 5 o'clock the newly-married couple left amidst
showers of rice on their honeymoon trip to the Lakes, taking with them the
good wishes of all present.— A Guest. |

Notes from Cromwell. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
CROMWELL, July 20.
The Alpine No. 2 return was rather above
expectations here, but is all the better for that. The return next week is
expected to eclipse it, however, as the wash is improving daily, and the gold
is obtained from side to side of the river. The Alpine Consol’s dredge got into
a good patch of wash yesterday, and the return will probably show a large increase
next week. The Upper Magnetic is only doing fair, and a little gold is being
got. The bottom is said to be rapidly improving. The Second Magnetic has pulled
ahead again. The Great Central dredge has bottomed, and black sand is showing a
proof that the gold is near. The Central Electric wash has picked up a lot
during the last two days. The appointment of Mr F. Kitto to the Royal Maori is
looked on as one of the best. The pity is that more masters are not appointed
from merit alone, as in this case.

The Tuapeka Times has the following
: — Early on Sunday morning last Mrs Kitto, wife of William Kitto, of
Dumbarton Rock, cut her throat with a dinner-knife. The windpipe is partly cut,
but the main artery was not severed. The unfortunate woman has had occasional
attacks of insanity, and no doubt was suffering from its effects at the time of
the rash act.
Her husband has been from home for some few weeks,
it appears, and is expected to return in a few days. Dr MacLachan is the
medical attendant, and we learn that he has hope of Mrs Kitto's recovery."
Otago Witness , 13 June 1889, Page 17

OF Moses Edward MANUEL – ROXBURGH.
Otago Witness ,
Issue 2253, 6 May 1897, Page 25
It is with great regret that I have to record the
death of Mr Moses Edwin Manuel, which took place early on the morning of Sunday
2nd inst. The melancholy event was not unexpected, as Mr Manuel had
been in failing health for some weeks ; but none the
less his departure will be sincerely regretted. He has been a resident of
Tuapeka for more than 30 years, and had made hosts of friends, by whom he will
be greatly missed.
A prominent miner for many years at the Blue Spur
and at the Teviot, he had latterly devoted himself entirely to the cultivation
of an orchard, which yielded a good income. He took a strong interest in
politics, in education, and in every movement which was likely to benefit the
district in which he lived. He was possessed of great business ability, was
upright and honourable in his dealings, and was genial to all. A good citizen,
a good husband, a good father, it will be long before his memory fades from among
us. He leaves behind him a family of five, who are grown up, and who are well
provided for. The following is a sketch of his career :
Mr Manuel was a native of Lanner, in

FATAL
INQUEST. (Our Correspondent.) KUMARA,
Feb. 12.
At 12.30 a.m. to-day the firebell rang an alarm
of fire and it was found that a cottage belonging to Ellen Kitto, in which she
resided, was on fire. The fire brigade and a large number of citizens were
quickly on the spot, and found that all efforts were futile to quench the fire,
as the cottage was in one mass of flames and out of range of the brigade water
supply. Grave fears were entertained as to the safety of Mrs Kitto, as a light
had been seen in the cottage during .the night. About one
a.m, the. fire had been sufficiently burned out to enable persons to
approach close to the site of the cottage, when the charred remains of deceased
were found lying in the fire place, and with the aid of a few buckets of water
found in some tubs, the debris round the remains was extinguished, and the
remains, consisting of the trunk, were taken possession of by Constable Ryan
and removed to the old Post Office Hotel. The deceased was "a native of
An inquest was held .at the Court house
before Mr J. A. Murdoch (deputy-coroner), and the following jury: — R. Rouse
(foreman), T. Jorgensen, S, Peters, E. Richards, J. Mc.Glone, and W. Roberts touching. the death of Ellen Kitto, which took place at her
residence early this morning Inspector Black conducted the inquiry for the
police, and called Celia Rose Hope who said— I am the .daughter of deceased
Ellen Kitto, and the wife of Henry B. Hope, mining advocate, Kumara. My mother
resided by herself and was in the habit of reading in bed. She used mostly
candles when reading. I know where my mothers house
was. The house burnt down was where she resided, and from all surrounding
circumstances I am satisfied that the remains recovered are the remains of my
mother.
John Norman Harper deposed to being 14 years of age, that he knew the deceased He saw her
last about half past 9 last night. I was on the footpath and she was in the
middle of the road, near. Pierson's. She appeared to
be in her usual health and looked to be sober.
Peter McMahon sworn, said— I am a miner
residing at Kumara. I knew the deceased Ellen Kitto. Have
known her for a number of years. Last saw her alive about 4 p.m.
yesterday She appeared to be in her usual health. She was not exactly temperate
in her habits. She was in the habit of reading at nights. She used to read a great
deal. I was woke by a stone thrown on the roof of my
house. Got up to see what was the matter, and saw Mrs
Kitto's cottage in flames. I was not present when the remains were recovered.
Arthur Mcllroy deposed.—
l am a grocery assistant residing in Kumara. I was In
bed and heard someone sing out "fire” and jumped out of bed, and after
putting on my clothes ran with the reel and hose to the scene of the fire. The
house was in a mass of flames. It would be impossible for any to be alive in
the house. Saw what "seemed to be the remains of deceased lying in the
fireplace.
Thomas Ryan sworn, said— l am a constable residing at Kumara. From information received
I went to the scene of the fire. The building was pretty well burnt down. I saw
the body which now lies in the old Court House Hotel. Have known the deceased
for about six years, She was of intemperate habits, but not so much lately. I
cannot say in which part of the house the fire originated.
Dr Mojkane sworn, said — I know the deceased
when alive. I was at the cottage; saw the charred remains of a human being. The
remains .were probably those of a female., and I am of
opinion they were those of deceased, Mrs Kitto.
This concluded the evidence and the jury returned a verdict "That
the remains are those of Ellen Kitto ; that she was
burnt to death in her cottage; but there was no evidence to show how the fire
originated."
The funeral of the late
Mrs Ellen Kitto, which was a private
one, took place yesterday afternoon, the funeral cortege moved from the old
Post Office Hotel at 2
p.m. for St. Patrick's Church, and thence to the Kumara cemetery The Rev.
Father Creed performed the Catholic ceremony for the dead at the church and the
grave. The chief mourners were Mrs Thos Stevenson (Greymouth) and Mrs H B.
Hope, of Kumara. The pall bearers were Captain A. Modier. and
Messrs . H B. Hope, J. Jorgensen, and Johnston. Very
deep sympathy is felt here for the relatives of the late Mrs Kitto in their sad
and sudden bereavement, and the loss of a kind and affectionate mother. (Grey River Argus 14 Feb. 1908)

Murder at Miller's Flat. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Roxburgh, May 29th.
A man named John Kitto, of Millers Plat, went to
the residence of his son-in-law, Joseph Augustus Roggiero, about 7 o'clock last
night and, without any warning, shot through the window with a rifle at
Roggiero, who was sitting by the fire. The screams of Roggiero's wife attracted
her brother-in-law, who had to pass Kitto's house. Kitto shot at him also, the
ball entering the wrist and coming out at the elbow. Roggiero died a short time
afterwards. Kitto, who was in the Lunatic Asylum some time ago, came to
Roxburgh and gave himself up to the police.
Later. Kitto is now in the lock-up at Roxburgh. He is
evidently suffering from religious mania. When told that his son-in-law was
dead, he replied, "Praise be to God. " It is
just reported at Roxburgh that unfavourable symptoms are showing in the wounded
man, whose name is Kloogh. Dr McCarthy, with Sergeant-Major Moor are expected from

THE MILLER'S FLAT MURDER. THE INQUEST. (from our own
correspondent.) ?
An inquest was held by Jonas Harrop, Esq., J.P., acting
coroner, on Tuesday, at the'residence of the murdered man Roggiero, at Miller's
Flat. Mr Nicholson was sworn foreman of the Jury and after the Jury had viewed
the body, an adjournment was made to the residence of Peter Kloogh. ' Sergeant-major
Niels Peter Kloogh, the wounded man, whose evidence
was taken in bed, deposed:
l
am a miner, residing on the east bank of the river at Miller's Flat. I remember
Sunday evening, the 28th inst. I was in my house, and about 20 minutes past 6
p.m. I heard tne shot of a gun. It was moonlight, I heard a scream, and then
went outside. I saw two of Wm Kitto's children coming towards my house. They
were running. They told me that John Murray had accidentally shot Joseph
Roggiero. The children are about 10 and 11 years of age. I then ran as hard as
I could towards Roggiero's. On the way I met Betsy Ann Roggiero, wife of
deceased, near John Kitto's fence, and near his house. She said the old man
(meaning John Kitto) had shot Joe (meaning her husband), now deceased. From
what Mrs Roggiero told me, I ran to give what assistance I could to deceased.
When I proceeded about 10 or 12 steps I received a
bullet wound in my right arm. Mrs Roggiero went in the opposite direction. I
was shot on the path near John Kitto's house, when about four yards from the
fence. I saw a man standing between John Kitto's house and the fence when I
received the shot, and immediately my hand dropped, and I heard the report of a
gun. The man was about 20 yards distant from me when I received the shot. I
could not recognise the man. I noticed the flash from the gun. I feel satisfied
that I was shot by that man. I did not notice any gun, but came home again. The
man appeared to have on dark clothing. l am acquainted
with John Kitto; he is my father-in-law. He answered the description of the man
whom I saw and who wounded me, and resides in the house with his wife and
family. I am not aware of any ill-feeling, but we have not been speaking for
some time. I heard his family say he did not care to converse with anyone.
About Tuesday last I saw John Kitto’s son William carrying a gun at Miller's
Flat. I recognise the gun now produced; it is not the one William Kitto
carried, but it is John Kitto Jun.'s gun. I recognise it by the brass mountings
and large barrel. On returning to my house after receiving the shot, I met my
wife, Tamar. I told her that I was shot too. I asked a man named James Burns to
go for a doctor. He caused Dr McCarthy to be sent for from
Betsy Ann Roggiero, wife of deceased, deposed :
I remember Sunday evening last. My husband was
sitting in the rocking-chair, putting the baby to sleep, at 20 minutes past 6
o'clock by our clock. The child is four months old. He was sitting in the
kitchen near the fire, nearly opposite the window, and facing it. There are
only two rooms in tho house (bedroom and kitchen), one window in each room.
There is only one door to the house, which opens to the outside. About the time
stated (6.20 p.m.) I was standing at the end of the table, washing up after
tea. A shot was fired through the kitchen window, which struck my husband in
the breast. He exclaimed, "My God, Annie, someone has shot me!" I
said, "Oh no, Joe, it is only someone playing a lark."
I ran out, thinking it was someone with Chinese
crackers. I saw my father, John Kitto, walk away from the window with his back
towards me. I said, "You wretch, what did you do that for?" — meaning, shooting my
husband. I did not hear him make any reply, but ran to my husband. As I entered
the door I met the deceased, with his hand across his chest, and saw the infant
fall from his arms on to the floor. I then put my arms round his neck. He said,
" Don't stay with me, Annie; run for help. I am shot."
I then ran out and called my brother-in-law, Niels
Peter Kloogh. 1 met my brother John nearly opposite their house. I told him to
go to deceased while I ran towards my brother-in-law, Peter, whom I met coming
running towards me, near my father's place, on the path. I requested him to go
to my husband, and was returning with him. I saw my father, John Kitto,
standing between his own house and the wire fence. He held up a gun to his
shoulder and deliberately took aim and fired at my brother-in-law, Niels Peter
Kloogh. After being shot he ran towards the house. I knew he was shot. The time
father put the gun to his shoulder I saw the flash. About 10 o'clock p.m. 1
returned to my own place with Mr Macklay and Mr McLelland. My husband expired
about 2 o'clock on the following morning (20th).
I have been nine years married in June next, and
have five children, the youngest four months and the eldest seven years. So far
as I know, my husband and father were on good terms.
By a Juror : I do not know
that the accused had ever threatened my husband.
The accused was then brought in and identified by witness’ as the man who shot her husband.
John Francis Kitto, Jnr.
I am the son of John Francis Kitto, the accused,
who is known as John Kitto, residing on the east side of the river at Miller's
Flat. l am a miner, 19 years of age. I had tea at home
on Sunday evening last, about
6 o'clock. My father was in tho house, and sitting
at the kitchen fire.
During the time I took tea I noticed nothing
unusual in his manner. I left the house
at 6:15 and went to William Murray's place, about 200 yards distant. While in
When I saw the gun on Sunday the nipple was in, but
now it appears to have been blown out.
W. Pool, constable in charge of Roxburgh
police-station, stated :
On Sunday night, 28th lnst. at 9.15, a man named John
Kitto called at Roxburgh and informed me he wished to give himself up. I asked
him his reason. He replied, for shooting his two sons-in-law, he had a gun in
his left hand, which he handed to me at my request, saying "This is the
gun I did it with. Take care of it, it is loaded." I asked him, "Who are your two
sons-in-law?" He replied he did not know, but knowing accused, I asked him
if he meant Peter Kloogh and " Mexican Joe."
He said he supposed so. I then locked him up. While searching him, I said,
"What brought this about?" He replied, "I will answer before a
judge."
I have examined the gun; it appears to be loaded.
It is a single-barrel, and tho nipple has been blown off. I proceeded to
Miller's Flat to make inquiry if there was any truth in Kitto's statement. On
arriving at Peter Kloogh's residence, I found he had been wounded in the arm.
He said he did not see the man who shot him, but thought it was the old man,
John Kitto. so then proceeded to Roggiero's— it was
about 2 a.m.— and found him lying on his bed dead, with a wound in his right
side. I now produce the gun received from Kitto at the lock-up. I produce the
bullet handed to me by Dr M'Carthy, who said he took it from deceased's body,
at the back part. The bullet appears to fit the bore of the gun.
Samuel Moore:
I am sergeant-major of constabulary, stationed at

I arrived at Miller's Flat and went to see Niels
Peter Kloogh at 9 p.m., and found him suffering from a gunshot wound in the
right arm. This morning I made a post-mortem examination on the body of
Augustus Roggiero (deceased). A bullet had gone through the left lobe of the
liver and one lung, fracturing the tenth rib on the right side, and lodging
there. I extracted tho bullet (now, produced). Death was caused by a gunshot
wound and the haemorrhage from the lung caused by the bullet.
James Kitto. miner, Moa
Flat, deposed:
The accused John Francis Kitto is my brother. He is
about 60 years of age, a married man, with a wife and 10 children, six being at
Home. When my brother was 15 years of age he had a severe fall of seven fathoms
in a coal-mine and injured his head, and since that he has never appeared to be
the same, always appearing light-headed. He was in the Lunatic Asylum four
years ago. He appears now to be worse than ever I saw him before, and he says
he glories in what he has done.
The Jury then retired, and returned with a verdict
of "Wilful murder" against the accused John Francis Kitto. When tho
accused was brought in for identification the scene was most heartrending. On

We give elsewhere a report of the inquest at
Miller's Flat on the body of the man Roggiero, shot by John Kitto. It resulted
in a verdict of " wilful murder " against
Kitto. Our correspondent informs us that the wounded man Niels Peter Kloogh
suffers a great deal from the wound in his arm, and is very weak, but no danger
is anticipated.

John Kitto, the man charged with the murder of
Roggiero at Millers Flat, has been transferred from the Gaol to the Lunatic
Asylum. The prisoner, since his lodgement in gaol, has been examined by
competent medical authorities, who pronounce him insane. Their report was
forwarded to the Hon. the Colonial Secretary, who ordered Kitto's removal to
the Asylum pending his trial at the ensuing sessions of the Supreme Court,

The Mount Benger Mail gives the following further
particulars as to the insanity of the man Kitto :—
" For a month past he has been more unsettled than usual, and on the day
in question he was decidedly worse. He believed himself to be the Saviour (or
Joseph), his brothers and son-in-law being imps of Satan, Roggiero being Satan
himself. After the occurrence he crossed
the river in his own boat and made straight for Roxburgh, where he stated to
the police that he was inspired by God to commit the deed, and was on his way
to the New Jerusalem. Kitto's friends have recently spoken to several people in
Roxburgh about the state of his mind, but unfortunately nothing was done. He
says he has no fear of man, as God will see that no harm befalls him."

INDICTMENT for MURDER. John Francis Kitto, who was found guilty by the
Coroner's Jury of the murder of his son-in-law, Joseph Augustus Roggiero, at
Miller's Flat, on the 28th of May last, was placed in
the dock. Mr Haggitt (the Crown prosecutor) said : In
this case, your Honor, the prisoner was found guilty of murder by the Coroner's
Jury, and the Grand Jury have also found a bill against him. Ho has been
confined in the Lunatic Asylum under the warrant of the Colonial Secretary,
issued under clause 7 of "The Lunatics Act, 1868." I applied for
instructions to the Minister of Justice as to whether he should be brought up
to be arraigned or not, and I was instructed to have him brought here and
arraign him. But I am informed by the superintendent of the Asylum that he is
not in a position to plead ; he is actually a lunatic,
and cannot, therefore, be put upon his trial. The course under such
circumstances, I imagine, is to empanel a jury to try the question whether he
is in a fit state to plead.
His Honor: Yes ; and if
the Jury find that he is not in a fit state to plead, an order can be made for
his confinement.
Mr Haggitt: There can be no doubt he is not in a
fit state to plead. Dr Neill will say so and there is no evidence on the other
side.
A jury of 12 was then sworn to try the question.
Mr Haggitt said :
Gentlemen of the Jury, the prisoner was committed on a coroner's warrant to the
Gaol in
Dr A. H. Neill, superintendent of the Lunatic
Asylum,
His Honor : As the
prisoner has stood silent and not manifested any signs of insanity, I suppose I
must ask him if he has any questions to put to the witness.
Prisoner (to witness) ; In
what part have you found me a lunatic, that I am not able to plead my own case?
Witness: From the letters you have written and the
delusions under which you suffer.
Prisoner: I should like to have an explanation from
someone to show whether I am a lunatic or not.
His Honor: Have you any of the, letters with you?
Witness: I have them all, your Honor. (Witness here
handed in a large packet of letters.) .
His Honor: What are his delusions?
Witness: Religious delusions?
His Honor: Of what nature?
Witness : He imagines himself to be a Jew.
His Honor : What else?
Witness: He considers his son-in-law, Roggiero, was
possessed of a devil.
Prisoner: Not possessed, but was.
Witness: Was the devil?
His Honor : Anything else?
Witness: That his son-in-law who is wounded is also
the devil.
His Honor: Is there anything else, doctor?
Witness: All his delusions,
consist of that character.
His Honor : Does he
imagine himself to be any particular person?
Witness: l am not aware of
his imagining himself to be other than a Jew.
Prisoner: I am professing to be the Christ.
His Honor: Yes; quite so..
(Addressing the Jury) : Gentlemen, that will do. I’d
know if it is necessary for me to say, anything. You have heard the evidence,
and the statement of the prisoner which he has just now made. If a prisoner is
insane at the time of arraignment— at the time when he properly comes up to be
arraigned, he is not to be Arraigned, because, not being in full possession of
his senses, he cannot plead to the indictment, nor conduct his defence with
proper care. All that you have to determine is whether he is in possession of
his senses or not. Will you be kind enough to consider your verdict.
The Jury at once returned a verdict that the
prisoner was insane. His Honor directed that the verdict should be recorded,
and the accused kept in strict custody until the pleasure of the Colonial
Secretary be known. The prisoner was then removed by one of the warders of the
Asylum.
TRUE BILLS.
In the following cases the Grand Jury re turned
true bills :— Thomas Hodgetts, stealing from a dwelling ; Charles Coleman,
alias Amos Haynes, forgery (two indictments) ; Samuel Henry Lees, forgery ;
same, forgery and littering; Thomas Ramage, rape; Charles Wilkins and Andrew
Neilson, using false trade marks ; John Hewitt, killing a bullock with intent
to steal the skin j Ah Vow, for robbery with violence; Richard Nelmes,
cattle-stealing ; Cuthbert M'Kellar, embezzlement ; John Francis Kitto, murder.
Eliza Whittet, stealing from a dwelling.

Kitto, who was ordered to be removed to the Asylum. The first they saw in
Then the following memo, was received by the
Minister for Justice :—
We have again to protest against the Inspector of
Prisons meddling with petty details here which the Act leaves with us to manage
on the spot. With regard to Kitto’s removal, the gaoler is told he evinced a
great want of judgment in placing handcuffs on a lunatic without first
consulting the Gaol surgeon. We, knowing
Kitto, and his peculiar kind of insanity, have no hesitation in saving that the
gaoler, not being allowed to employ a cab, adopted the next best course, and
the gaol surgeon agrees with us. It is the gaoler who is responsible for the
prisoner, and he is bound to take the usual way of preventing an escape,
especially when a prisoner is charge with murder, and should not be blamed when
he only does his duty. The gaoler would have been blamed had he neglected to
take the usual precautions if the prisoner had taken a run, and that was the
only thing which required to be guarded against in Kitto's case. So the
inspector is not in earnest when he says the prisoner should have been marched
through the streets in a strait jacket?
Rather than allow a prisoner who required a strait-jacket to be marched
through the streets of
(Signed) John Logan, V.J. James Brown, V.J.
Captain Hume : There are
no orders that I know of to the effect that cabs are not to be used in such
cases, and I certainly said nothing about marching a man through the streets in
a strait-jacket. Mr Solomon did not know where the inspector got his idea that
the surgeon should be consulted before a prisoner was placed in irons.
Mr Whitefoord : I should
certainly think it ought to be done before a lunatic was put in irons.
Mr Solomon : The prisoner
had to be removed to the Asylum, and it amounts to this, that the gaoler cannot
use his discretion as to the safest mode of conveyance.
Mr Whitefoord : It
concerns the treatment of a lunatic, and I certainly think that under the
circumstances it was the duty of the gaoler to consult the medical officer.
Captain Hume : The gaoler
says he had not authority to employ a cab. I know of no such thing.
Mr Solomon : If he had
employed one, there would have been another letter from the inspector saying
that 7s 6d was too much.
Captain Hume : Has he ever
had such a letter?
Mr Solomon : Certainly.
Captain Hume ; Oh, if be
can show such, well and good.
Mr Whitefoord said that the evidence had better be
proceeded with.
Witness continued: He had reason to believe, …
