THE KITTOs OF REDRUTH and MOONTA

This tree is provided to family historians without prejudice. I have constructed most of my family trees using the data I have available, and in a few cases it is estimated as the best fit from available choices. In this tree, several of the links are yet to be proved, so any help that you can give to confirm any line would be appreciated by me and others searching in this family. More modern families also need your inputs, because as I can link modern families to each other, and thus it enables a focus on their common ancestry. The memories of one branch may not be complete, but yet may fill in gaps of another branch. Only by a concerted effort can we really define the true lineage. Help me to help you by sharing what you have. Many additional details have been provided by other researchers and where possible I have included the contributor's email addresses within the file next to their families, however there are countless others also involved. I am willing to also add you in to your KITTO family. My thanks to you all.

ABBREVIATIONS USED

Other than the standard abbreviations and Chapman County codes I also use

(OPR) to show I extracted the data myself from the parish registers on microfilm, or have been given the full details..

(IGI reg) to designate source of IGI materials with "registers" source codes

(IGI patron) to show IGI materials with another source (not always reliable)

"c" before year date to show an estimated year

"cc" before year date to show I have used the spouse's date data as a rough guide

The earliest ancestors of this family group that I feel I have been able to isolate is the family of Thomas Kitto and Margaret of Gwennap and Camborne. They appeared to have moved from Gwennap to Camborne in around 1768 and then to Redruth in about 1778, though some family members moved a few years earlier. There is now a large family in Australia – see TABLE ONE

WILLIAM ANDREWS, 34, was charged with having on the 13th of July last, at the parish of Gwennap, stolen two pieces of rope, five bolts, one burr, and a quantity of iron, the property of H. P. ANDREWS. Esq., and others.  WILLIAM KITTO, manager of Poldice mine, Gwennap, met the prisoner near the mine, with a donkey and two or three packs, containing what he thought were suspicious articles.  He asked the prisoner what they contained, but the latter refused to give any answer.  There was a blacksmith's shop near, and he called out the men, who proceeded to search the packs, which were found to contain various iron articles belonging to a mine.

He sent for a constable, and proceeded to test the articles, to find out whether any of them belonged to Poldice, but could not identify them; there was, however, some flat rope which he thought belonged to Consols mine; he accordingly sent to Consols mine, and kept the prisoner at the counting house of Poldice.  The constable was called, and produced the articles; and other witnesses were called to identify the property.

Mr. HUGHES, on behalf of the prisoner, contended that the identity was not clearly made out, either with respect to the articles, or the prisoner.  Verdict, Guilty.  Twelve Months' hard labour.
