An overview of Perth and Fremantle
and
another of Western Australia with lots of general information.
Live Cam of the city
Shopping for food-There are 2 markets both within a few minutes by car and about
10 minutes if you walked. Stammers is on the corner of Canning Highway and Petra
street. If you drive out the drive turn left, then first left ,then left at the T junction then you will find
it on the right as you get to the highway. There is plenty of parking and a liquor store
and also a hardware store.
Shopping in general-Fremantle is 5 minutes in the car, turn right out the
drive, left at the highway and you will drive into it. The Wool Store centre in Fremantle
has a large Coles food market and many other smaller stores. Fremantle has a lot of shopping and most of it is open 7 days
the same as Perth. Perth is fine for shopping but most people would shop in the suburbs.
Garden City Shopping Mall
is about 15 minutes in the car. Left out of the drive, left at the T junction and follow
Marmion Street until you see the Mall on the left about 8km
Chemist,Pharmacy,Drugstore-There are at least 4 of these at the Stammers
market. For any serious medication you will need a prescription from a doctor.
Doctors-There are many in the area but we go to Dr Jacobs at the Lewin Medical
centre also at the Stammers market. There is also Dr Nelson at the end of our
street, turn right out of the street.
Dentist-We go to Roland Godfrey down near the Action shopping mall. Right
out the drive, left at the highway and down about 4 blocks on the left. Dentists
are hard to get
into but if you mention our name then he should see you. Hours 9-5pm Monday to Friday.
Golf-There is the Royal Fremantle Club which would be open if you belonged to a
golf club overseas otherwise the public course is nearby which is only 9 holes but they
charge less than A$10 for a round.
The beach-The Port beach is very safe as it is sheltered by the island. Its
about
5 minutes in the car and 30 minutes if you walked. There is some surf at Cottesloe beach
which is 2 beaches up (to the right) but for better surf you would need to go to Trigs (be
careful as can be a dangerous beach)
Rottnest Island-The island
is only 30 minutes off in one of the many ferry. There is one from C Shed on Victoria Quay in
Fremantle. Great for a day out.
The East Fremantle Heritage trail-There
is always interesting places to walk around the area.
Going to the movies-There are about 10 movie theatres in Fremantle and
the cost is around $12 if you go on Saturday night. Tuesday is traditionally the cheap
night at around $6 to $7.
Restaurants-Fremantle has numerous eating places from the reasonably priced to
the very expensive. The Cafe type
dining usually does not need a reservation but most others do.
A lot of our Western Australian restaurants are BYO which allows you to take your own wine
with you. (see the wine cooler in the kitchen with frozen ice container in the freezer)
Northbridge in Perth City is the other major eating area and night club area.
Another useful dining out guide
Car Rentals-The cheapest seems to be Bayswater telephone 618-9325
1000 who will rent a Corolla for around A$25 a day for a week or more and the cars
are generally very new. (They dont have a web page) If your planning to drive into the
country then you will need a larger car like a Camry or Ford Falcon. There are any number
of car rental companies in Fremantle and at the airport , its a matter of checking all the
rates at the time. Generally the large companies like Avis are a lot more expensive. This Perth Car rental will give an idea of
the rates and we have an Apex Car
rental in walking distance from us.
Taxi-are not all that cheap but if needed then the numbers are Swan Taxi
13 13 88 and Yellow Cab 13 19 24.Other are at this link
Parks around the State-Useful link and don't forget the really great Kings Park that is about 1000
acres right next to Perth city. The official
web site is also good.
Wildlife Parks-About 15 minutes in the car to Adventure World
that has a lot of rides for the kids but also has Koalas. There is also a large wildlife park at Caversham. We
also have a world class Zoo that close to
Perth city
