George died in a vehicle accident in which the timber truck he was driving left the road and rolled down a steep slope. Evelyn was with him but was thrown clear of the wreckage and survived. George had stopped to assist another motorist who had broken down. After helping him to restart his vehicle, George was checking his rear-view mirror to check on the other motorist when the truck left the road. The accident possibly happened in the Warburton, Victoria area. The inquest took place on Auguest 9th, 1948. The official cause of death was "Motor Truck accident".

SHEPHERD.--On May 19, at Mansfield, result of an accident, George Shepherd (late 9th Div., A.I.F.), beloved husband of Evelyn, loved son of Emma and the late Charles, loved brother of Frederick, Adelaide (deceased), Daisy (Mrs. Rainbow), Charles, Olive (Mrs. McKenna, deceased), Ivy (Mrs. Admas) and Len.
