Mary's mother Barbara Scott was transported to Tasmania in 1837, arriving 1838. Mary, aged 11 travelled with her mother and a baby sister aged 11 months (believed to have died). Her mother Barbara Scott died shortly after arrival in Tasmania. Mary had 2 other siblings but no information as yet. They remained in England with their father.

Mary was admitted to the Queen's Orphanage in Hobart on 30 April, 1838, aged 11. She was discharged on 11 July 1841 (listed as Mary Hemming).
