bullet General Notes:

The "Otago" sailed from Plymouth 18 March 1886, arriving at Fremantle on 4 June 1886. The passenger list includes:
SHEPHERD Charles, SHEPHERD Mary, SHEPHERD Adelaide, SHEPHERD Charles, SHEPHERD George, SHEPHERD Frederick, SHEPHERD Harry, SHEPHERD Frank, SHEPHERD Bert, See WA Shipping and scroll down to Otago, 1886.
---------------------------------
The family appears to have remained in WA for about six months. Ella Maud was born in WA in 1886. I have discovered that WA began major railway constructions prior to the Shepherds arrival. The WA government actively sought experienced railway workers by offering them assisted passage. Around this time an economic recession/depression occurred, and funding for the railway was cut, possibly explaining the next move. The family continued on to Tasmania aboard the Chollerton. The Chollerton was operated by William Milburn & Co (London). She was 2650 ton, and visited Hobart in 1886. Note that there was a Robert Chollerton Shepherd born in 1887 at sea to Charles Shepherd and Emily Howard.
---------------------------------
Mervyn Percy Shepherd was born in Launceston in 1888.
---------------------------------
The next child (Leonard) is born in Footscray, Victoria in 1891.
--------------------------------
28/10/2001:-- Note that Charles' brother George arrived in Tasmania 11 April 1886, and George was in charge of laying rails on the North Eastern Line on 4 January, 1887. This may explain why Charles and family travelled from Western Australia to Tasmania, arriving in Hobart on 9 April 1887. George's nephew Charles Walter appears to have stayed in Tasmania, possibly gaining a railways job when the family were passing through. Note that Charles (senior) son Mervyn Percy was born 23 Nov 1888 at Launceston, when Charles Walter was 17 years old.
---------------------------------
One of the brothers of Charles Walter Shepherd is said to have moved to the United States. This could in fact be his uncle Fred (ID=359).
8 March 2002: Death certificate of Frederick Shepherd (ID=86) names his place of birth as Canada (1876) - placing the family there at that time, well before the move to Australia.
Note also that 2 children of Frederick Shepherd (ID=359) (Charles Walter's uncle) were born in the USA.
