Another name for James was James Murrill. 1
General Notes:
Convict permission to marry: 13 May 1851. GIBNEY Ellen (Australasia) to James Murrell (free) Con 52/3 p 314. (i.e. in 1851 Murrell is a free man). ----------------------------------------------------- Possible James Murrell (looking less likely now): Convicted 12 March 1845 at Woodbridge, Suffolk, England for breaking and entering a mill. Sentence: 10 years. Transported to Tasmania on the Marion. Description: Trade - Miller. Height 5/2. Age 20(i.e. born c1825). Complexion sallow. Hair dark brown. Eyes hazel. Nat Place W.Ipswich. Conditional pardon 14 Dec 1853. (i.e. in 1851 this Murrell is not free) ----------------------------------------------------- Conflict: Our James age stated at marriage:35, hence born c.1816 Our James used a mark at his marriage to Ellen. Our James was a widow when he married Ellen. Our James Murrell identified as "free" when Ellen applied to marry (1851). Strangely, our James age was registered as 74 on his death in 1874 ... wife definitely Ellen Murrell of Perth (Tas). - whereas - Convict James Murrell age 20 at trial 1845, hence born c.1825 Convict James Murrell could both read & write according to his record. Convict James was single. Convict James Murrell was granted conditional pardon in 1853. .... hence take care citing James Murrell (Marion) convict records. ----------------------------------------------------- Another possible James: IGI batch C040804 - James John Murrell, birth 5 Aug 1817, Christened 16 Apr 1820 St Leonards, Shoreditch, London, England. Has a brother Richard, another William Daniel, father James. These names closely match our James and Ellen's childrens names. No evidence of this James in Australia yet though. ----------------------------------------------------- Since James gave his age of 35 at his marriage in 1851, we can probably assume his first marriage was 1835 onwards. Since he was a widow, his first wife would have died between 1835 and 1851. No such death found in NSW, Vic & Tas indexes so far. ----------------------------------------------------- Children: Richard (1852 - confirmed) Charlotte (1854 - confirmed) H (Henry, 1857/58 - marginal evidence). See Ellen's death notice from The Examiner, 1901*, marriage to Susan, Susan's TAMIOT record, witness at marriage of George Johnson to Mary Ann Murrell, 1882. James William (1855 - unconfirmed, married Angelina Boon 1889, married Eliz Clarke 1892, will 1892, died 1894 Launceston) John James (1857 - confirmed) Mary Ann (probable - has a daughter Georgina Appleby 1879, father unnamed, informant was Ellen Murrells, grandmother, Perth) Edward (1867-1869 - unconfirmed)
----------------------------------------------------- Query posted by a David Murrell, regarding Richard & James Murrell (sufficient info to identify them as our Murrells) gives a possible name of James father as Henry Murrell.
