After completing this unit, you should be able to:
  • Explain the role of reproduction and the advantages of the type of reproduction characteristic of humans.
 
  • Label the main structures of the male reproductive system and explain the function of each.
 
  • Label the main structures of the female reproductive system and explain the function of each.
 
  • Outline the process of cell division which is involved in the formation of eggs and sperm (sex cells) and understand the differences between cell division for reproduction and cell division for growth.
 
  • Compare the process involved in sperm production and those involved in egg production.
 
  • Identify adaptation of the human reproductive systems which assist transport of sex cells.
 
  • Relate the series of events between fertilisation of the egg by the sperm and the implantation of the embryo into the wall of the uterus.
 
  • Define the terms ‘hormone’ and ‘endocrine gland’ and then apply them to reproduction.
