After completing this unit, you should be able to:
  • Recognise, label and draw a diagram of and describe the structure of the human respiratory system, including the nose, pharynx,
    larynx, trachea, lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, pleural membranes, diaphragm, intercostal muscles and vocal cords.
 
  • Describe the mechanics of the breathing process including the action of the muscles involved and how this affects relative air pressures inside and outside the lungs.
 
  • Describe how the composition of inhaled and exhaled air differ and how the differences are brought about.
  • Describe how and where gas exchange between the air and blood takes place.
  • Describe the first aid techniques required in resuscitation.
  • Describe the role of red blood cells and plasma in the transport of gases.
  • Understand the diseases asthma, emphysema and lung cancer.
