Competitive giant pumpkins are of the variety “Atlantic Giant”.
Two on a pallet.

Giant pumpkins need a forklift and pallet to move them around.
The pumpkin at the back is shaped like a butternut.

This year’s winning pumpkin from Loui Della Pollina is 132kg.
That is two and a half times heavier than last year’s winning punk.

Large watermelons are in a competitive class of their own.
This one was the second heaviest.

An interested by-stander!

An overview of this year’s entries. The larger watermelon overhangs both sides of the bale.
In the foreground shadow are several exceedingly tall sunflowers, probably “Russian Giant”.

This is the annual set-up: an arc of bales with punks behind and smaller vegetables on the bales.
There is also a competitive class for the largest table pumpkin. Although unspecified varieties,
they look like one of the common ironbark punks such as “Jarrahdale”.

The Dwellingup annual school fete occurs on the oval with about 30 stalls.
I always buy two jars of fig jam from two different stalls.

Mini-tractor pulls cut-down 44-gallon drums.
It’s an alternative ride to those on one of the machines in the shopping centre.
Oh, all right! 200L drums.

Prize-giving:
Dwellingup Primary School Principal Colleen Sing presents First
Prize to Loui Della Pollina for his 132kg “Atlantic Giant” pumpkin.

Prize-giving: Judy Giumelli collecting second
prize on behalf of Robert for a pumpkin of 79.1kg.
Judy said, in a spirit of friendly competitiveness, that…
“a misshapen pumpkin ought not be eligible for first prize!”
Robert and Loui have each won twice in the last 4 years so the
competition between friends will continue to become stronger.

Kevin Pratt collecting various prizes on behalf of his son, Kade:
heaviest table pumpkin; most unusual fruit (Buddha’s hand);
tallest sunflower; second heaviest watermelon.

Buddha’s Hand is the unusual fruit grown by KP.

Colleen in charge!

Winners are grinners! Loui Della Pollina with the perpetual trophy.
Loui also won three years ago (2009) with a pumpkin of a similar weight (152.7kg).
There must be something in that soil at Jarrahdale! Well done, Loui!
