Some responses to Strategy 6
On pages 44 & 45 of Two-Way English there is information about Aboriginal English words. There are examples of words from Aboriginal languages (eg, from Nyungar), which may occur in their original form, and words from English with may or may not have the same meaning. Teachers may benefit from this information when they:
- seem to know little about Aboriginal English;
- are keen to learn more about their students' dialect;
- want to develop materials to explore the differences between Aboriginal English words and Standard English words;
- don't fully understand what their students are talking about;
- want to talk about how words differ in different languages and dialects;
- appear to prejudge what they hear as offensive.
