Everyone has command of different sets of vocabulary. We have:
- formal speech where we choose words which reflect politeness (eg, Good Morning instead of Hi or How ya goin) or choose more learned alternatives (eg, purchase instead of buy etc);
- occupational words where we need to name the objects and concepts what we work with (eg, curriculum, outcomes, assessment for teachers, or carburettor and catalytic converter for mechanics);
- casual words which we use with close friends or mates (eg, a coldie, a barbie, rage on, a chat or gossip, etc);
- family words will be use within our families (eg, brekkie time, afters, the shack, etc)
We call the different vocabulary we use for different situations and circumstances our register.
