Tertiary:

1974 -  Mature Age University Entrance, The Flinders University of South Australia to study for a Bachelor of Arts, part-time.
1980 -  Completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree with First Class Honours in French.
1981 -  Awarded a University Post-Graduate Scholarship at the Australian National University,  Canberra,  to study for a Master of Arts.
1983 -  Completed a Master of Arts Degree in Linguistics, with coursework and sub-thesis research into the acoustic analysis of Latvian vowels.
1988 -  Awarded a Commonwealth Post-Graduate Research Award at University of Western Australia,  to study for a Doctorate in Linguistics.
1996 - Completed a Doctorate with the Centre for Linguistics on the grammatical description of Mauricien, the creole language spoken in Mauritius.

1998 Position: Contract Linguist, Kurangkurl Consultancy, Bunbury.
Duties: To advise on and record proceedings at the Kaata-Wankinyiny Regional Council Noongar Language and Culture Workshop held on 28-29th January 1998, to assist in the preparation of a report outlining major issues and recommendations and minutes of the proceedings.
1997-1998: Position: Academic English Tutor, Community Health Research Training Unit, Department of General Practice, University of Western Australia.  Duties: To assist post-graduate students from overseas in the preparation of Masters theses and research reports.
1997-1998: Position: Consultant Research Associate, Centre for Applied Language Research, Edith Cowan University.
 Duties: To research, develop and author an interactive multi-media package to assist tertiary level beginners with the demands of academic writing.
1997-1998: Position: Research Co-ordinator (.25), Centre for English Language Teaching, University of Western Australia.
 Duties: To carry out language and literacy research in relation to learning English as a Second Language and non-native speakers within the tertiary system, for example, an investigation of the predictive value of the TOEFL university entrance test at post-graduate level.

 Duties: To assist with training of Aboriginal Islander Education Workers to carry out data collection within their schools, to carry out linguistic analysis of samples of Aboriginal student speech with the assistance of Aboriginal research assistants and to assist in the development of a final report and curriculum materials which reflect ‘two-way’ learning and acknowledgement of the Aboriginal world view.
1995-1996: Position: Research Assistant (.5), Centre for Applied Language Research, Edith Cowan University
 Duties:  To collect data on communication patterns and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at tertiary level as part of an ARC grant entitled 'Framing Student Literacy: Aspects of cross-cultural communication in Australian universities'.
1995-1996: Position: Research Assistant (.5), Graduate School of Education,  The University of Western Australia.
 Duties: Collection and discourse analysis of samples of native and non-native speaking tertiary student writing for the ARC funded grant entitled: 'Framing Student Literacy: Aspects of cross-cultural communication in Australian universities'.
1996-1998: Position: Project Officer (.25) for the Child Literacy and ESL Research Node of Language Australia (formerly the National Language and Literacy Institute of Australia).
 Duties: The administration and monitoring of small research grants to primary and secondary teachers and other researchers.
1996: Position: Co-researcher Bilingual Interface Project.
 Duties: To interview, collate and produce a document investigating L1 and L2 interface in children enrolled in the Khmer/English Bilingual Programme at Koonawarra Primary, Karrawarra, WA.
1994: Position:  Research Consultant for Language Australia (formerly the National Language and Literacy Institute of Australia).
 Duties:  To carry out an evaluation of the Balcatta ESL project, interviewing teachers, children and parents.
1993-1994: Position: Research Assistant, Graduate School of Education, University of Western Australia.
 Duties:  To analyse and compare the use of Academic English by first year undergraduate students from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB) and English-speaking students.
1994: Position: Research Assistant, Language Studies, Edith Cowan University.
 Duties:  To investigate and report on the linguistic and cultural factors affecting communication between  (NESB) students and Edith Cowan Staff.  This research was made possible by a grant from the University's Equity Project Funding.
1993 - 1994: Position:  Sessional Lecturer in Linguistics for students of English as a Second Language.  The University of Western Australia, Centre of English Language Teaching.
 Duties:  To design and present the Linguistics component of a three week Intensive English Course for undergraduate students from Reunion Island.
