Concepts are abstractions, ideas which encapusulate a range of often complex meanings. So that we may talk about the concept of hegemony, which enables the writer to assume that with this one word there are a range of shared meanings which incorporate the specific characteristics associated with this concept. Furthermore, concepts then feed into larger theories whereby the concept of hegemony may be a component of a theory of social inequality.
