Usually a means of making an ethnography, participant observation involves the researcher becoming immersed in the group being studied so that their interactions are from within the group rather than from an outside perspective. The extent to which the researcher takes the group perspective is obviously a matter of degree and there is a great deal of debate as to just what degree of involvement is required for the research.
