There are two main types of validity:

• Internal validity is associated with how representative a sample is of reality. It questions whether the small proportion which is studied is a true example of the whole.
• External validity is about how well findings can be generalised to the other settings, that is, can they be repeated with another similar population and equivalent results achieved.
