Project 8 - Tackling Talk in Education

What sorts of words will your students need to continue their education?

In this project you will need to make sure that you are focusing on spoken language not written language. You will also need to consider language for learning and social interaction.

Research Questions:

  1. What vocabulary is needed when speaking in education environments or in different learning areas?
  2. Do your students currently have this range of vocabulary?
  3. What additional vocabulary do your students still need to be able to communicate successfully in this type of speech environment?

Method:

  • Make a note of the types of vocabulary that students will need as they continue their education.
  • Note in your DWP your students' current vocabulary range (i.e., is it formal, casual, academic, generic/hedged (e.g., 'sort of', 'a type of'), or does it contain specific terminology for the different learning areas)?
  • Note how you would normally record your assessment of vocabulary, e.g., would you:
    • note them as anecdotes,
    • record them in a portfolio,
    • conduct a formal test,
    • note them in your DWP, or
    • not normally assess or record it.
