Project 9 - Tackling Talk in the Skilled Trades

What sort of words are required in the skilled trades?

Do you need extra information on the types of vocabulary required for this type of communication?

Research Question:

  1. What specific words or phrases are necessary for a successful career in the skilled trade that you have studied?
  2. To what extent are students in your class aware of these terms?
  3. What vocabulary would a student need to learn in order to enter the skilled trades?
You will also need to consider language for learning and social interaction.

Method:

  • Choose the vocabulary of a particular skilled trade (e.g., mechanic, plumber, carpenter, hairdresser, etc).
  • Note in your DWP your students' knowledge and use of such words.
  • Note how you would normally record your assessment of this language features, e.g., would you:
    • note them as anecdotes,
    • record them in a portfolio,
    • conduct a formal test,
    • note them in your DWP, or
    • not normally assess or record them.
