The types of words your students might use

We change the types of words that we use all the time:

This might mean that:

They might have a special set of words that they use with brothers and sisters and cousins. These might be words that they have used with each other since very young, eg Sis, Cuz, Bub.

Your students might have particular ways that they ask for information when that want somone to tell them something eg, Go on, tell us what she said, or when they ask a question, eg, Are you going on the camp?

You might find that your students talk differently when they are talking to older people in their family, eg, Hi Mum! Hi Dad! but Hello Auntie Carol! Hello Gran! or when they are talking to you, eg, Please Mrs Collins, compared with Oh go on Mum. Your students of course have to learn new words when they study in each learning area, eg, narrative, poem, stanza in English, or radiation, ozone layer etc in Science and Environment etc. But your students also need the vocabulary to be able to communicate in their communities, to ask for and describe a particular hairstyle at the hairdressers, to explain how they feel at the doctor's surgery, to describe what they want fixed on their bike at a bike shop. They might also join in discussion on a family business, such as farming, or when socialising with their parents in a community environment, etc., so they also need the words to be able to do this.
