The Spanish Guitar

Musical Director: Jonathan Paget
Performed by: WAAPA guitar students and staff
Spain is the birthplace of the guitar; likewise, the guitar is at the heart of the Spanish musical soul. This concert traces this history of the guitar, from the delicate intabulations of 16th century vihuelistas, the rowdy songs and dances of the Spanish Baroque, the virtuosic masterpieces of its classical maestros, the passionate and folkloric works of the Romantics, as well as the soulful expressivity of its modern masters. WAAPA guitarists present this beautifully structured program of Spanish guitar music (including solo and chamber works), interwoven with insightful commentary by Dr Jonathan Paget. Tickets: $25/20

"La Guitaromanie"
(19th-Century Guitar Mania)

Musical Director: Jonathan Paget
Performed by: WAAPA guitar students and staff
The guitar was fantastically popular in early 19th-century Europe, leaving an indelible impression on the fashionable salons of the rich and famous. “La Guitaromanie” was used by contemporaneous Parisian guitarist Charles de Marescot to describe this phenomenon, illustrated by a famous drawing showing fashionable dandies smashing their “Lacôte” guitars over one another in a heated discussion over guitar technique at a Parisian café. In a potpourri of guitar solos and chamber works, WAAPA students and staff explore the untouched riches of the early Romantic guitar. Tickets: $25/20

Gardiner and Masuda each bring their own specialities to create a magical blend of music including exotic impressions from Japan and Spain, to intricate works of Bach, sweet sorbets of Schubert, passionate tangos and heartfelt originals. mimi duo has captivated Perth audiences since their inception in 2012 and are establishing a lasting musical collaboration through their many concert engagements across the state. 3rd May 2015 (Sunday) - 4pm (Doors open at 3:30pm)

Four & Six (violin, guitar)
Australian violinist Gillian Catlow and Luxembourg-born Dutch guitarist Charles Hoernemann began their musical partnership as Four on Six in 2010. Their diverse and ever-expanding repertoire includes Gypsy Jazz, Brazilian Choro, Tango, Bossa Nova, Samba, Waltz Musette, compositions from Scandinavia, the Beatles and tunes from the Great American Songbook. In short, if they love it, they play it!

Fado Pica (Portuguese guitar, flute/sax, guitar)
Fado Bica is WA’s leading Portuguese music group, playing traditional and new Fado, jazz and original compositions. Led by Mike Burns on Portuguese guitara, the group features Lucas van Berkel on flute and saxophones, and Peter Altmeier on guitar. With Manoli Vouyoucalos on bass, they are in the process of recording a CD, which should be finished in April. As with all Fado, the music can be pretty, bright, gentle or virtuosic, but always full of saudade – that magical element that joins it to samba, bossa and the classics of recent centuries. Fado Bica takes you on a journey of melody, improvisation and jangling grooves.
