Tuckfields Birds and other cards: types, variants, chronology, exchange tokens, albums, and miscellany

by Mark Calabretta and Cheryl Ridge

Card nos. 4 & 477

The third edition of our research article "Tuckfields Birds and other cards: types, variants, chronology, exchange tokens, albums, and miscellany" dated 2013/01/13, is now available in PDF format.  At 111 pages and over 26 Mbyte in size it's 50% larger than the second edition so please be patient while it downloads.  (Please contact the authors if you have any difficulty in this regard.)  For those familiar with the second edition, a colourised version is available that highlights the new material.

The second edition, which covered the Birds series cards, exchange tokens, and albums, is extended in the third edition to cover miscellany related to the Birds series such as the limited edition sets of teaspoons and canisters.  Also for the first time we detail the six other Tuckfields card sets — Fish, Animals, Dogs, Cats, Wildflowers, and Australian Heritage.  Also new in this edition is an analysis of the differences between the various Birds series, both in terms of subject matter and style, and there is a new appendix on card storage.  This edition also includes the first of the biographical sketches, that of Fred Tuckfield.

The material presented in the second edition has also been developed through further discoveries and research, particularly relating to advertisements in archival copies of The Age newspaper.  Notably, we have switched to the new type naming scheme foreshadowed in the second edition.  To assist with this we have prepared a quick reference guide in both browsable (HTML) and printable (PDF) formats.  Of course there are the inevitable corrections.

The authors are keen to hear from anyone who can contribute new material. The first and second editions of the article may also still be obtained by contacting them.
