Swan River Settlement
First Assignment
James Stirling's first assignment was to go to Northern Australia to select a place for settlement. Stirling learned that it was the monsoon period in the north, and not a good time for exploration.
Rather than waste time waiting in Sydney, he asked Governor Darling for permission to explore the Swan River. He hoped to find a good place for a colony.
