Old
Polia-Greenvale Cemetery
I
attended a ceremony on the 'Protection and Recognition of Old Polia-Greenvale
Cemetery in December 2003.The cemetery is on Greenvale Station which is
off the old Pooncarie Road between Menindee and Pooncarie. There were
more than 60 people present.
The cemetery was
registered on 7th April 1916.
In the McLean grave lies John
McLean who died 27th April 1849 aged 25 years. A story handed
down over the years says he was speared by aborigines. He is believed to
be the oldest known European person buried on the Darling.
The other
name is William McLean who died 28th October 1869.
Annie Page (nee
Munro) 1925. She was the wife of Charles Robert Page of Greenvale It is
thought that there could be more than 25 people buried there.
Polia was a very
large property before it was broken up into blocks. The 1881-2 Wentworth
Electoral Roll stated 34 people (all men - women could not vote in those
days) were listed for Polia.

In June, 1877,
Charles Carl (German Charley) married Anne Walsh, of Menindee. Because
of the absence of any form of medical aid, Mrs. Carl travelled by coach
to the Burra Hospital, South Australia, in 1878 for the birth of her
first child, William.
Down the creek from German Charley's hotel was a private cemetery, and
at least one of the children of Charles and Anne Carl to die in infancy
was buried there. (Also at the same cemetery is a headstone bearing the
touching tribute:
'James Pritchard Pickering Fullard, of
Sandhurst, Victoria, died
