Menindee Cemetery was dedicated in 1864. It is
likely that there were quite a number of people buried there before that
date. The oldest marked grave in the cemetery is of George Green in May
1863. He was a son of Paddy Green who was well known storekeeper and
speculator in the area at that time. Bridget Pain, wife of Thomas Pain
who built Maidens Hotel is dated 1864.
There are hundreds of unmarked graves in
the cemetery judging by the amount of deaths registered in Menindee as
far back as 1869. Births, deaths & marriages for Menindee were
previously registered in Wentworth. There are the deaths of many
unknown men registered in Menindee in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.
These people who were likely to have been buried as paupers were buried
on the river side of the cemetery but there is no sign of their ever
being graves there.
Some of the older graves are of Joseph Dunne, the
original owner of Netley Station, who drowned in Menindee Creek in 1874,
Edward Forde – Head Surveyor of the Darling River Survey Party 1866,
George Fullerton, Police Magistrate of Menindie – who died while
traveling to Mt Gipps 1882 and Nicholas Sadlier, manager of old
Albemarle Station for 42 years –died 1904. There are also many members
of the well known families of the area buried there. Some of the
families are Kellys, Sloanes, Williams, Maidens, Owens, Powers, Larkins,
Underdowns, Kolstads and Klemms
Menindee
Cemetery –Dedication of Plaques
7-5-2005
Since living in Menindee in the 1990’s I have
always had an interest in the Menindee Cemetery and the history of the
pioneers that rest there. Early in 2004 I approached Bill O’Brien,
General Manager of the Central Darling Council about making funds
available to research and recognize unmarked graves in this Cemetery.
Over 30 individual plaques were placed and a Memorial Cairn was built
which named about 50 persons who rest in unknown graves. A crowd of over
100 attended the ceremony on a bright sunny day. The plaques were
dedicated by Rev. David Covington Groth Parish Priest Anglican Ministry
District of Broken Hill. He later dedicated family plaques.
A memorial plaque was placed on the grave of
Bridget Pain 1864, wife of Menindee Founding Father Thomas Pain who
built Tom Pain’s Pub in 1852 (now Maidens Hotel) and their children.
About forty five members of the Pain families attended.

William and Emily Ah Chung was pioneer Chinese
Market Gardeners around 1870 They had ten children but only three
survived to adulthood. Their son Syd Ah Chung was the Menindee Baker for
many years. The bakery is now Ah Chung’s Bakehouse Gallery. Family
members attended and a plaque was placed on William & Emily’s grave in
memory of all the children. Syd rests next to them. The Ah Chung
descendants also visited where the Market Garden was so many years ago.
It is hard to imagine that these people carried water up the steep banks
of the river in buckets with a yolk across their shoulders but their
greatest hardship must have been burying seven of their ten children.

The broken headstone of Ellen Brayley 1883 was
found in a Menindee back yard. She was the wife of William E Brayley.
After much research her great grandson Kerry Brayley, was traced and
came from Southern California with his wife Irma, for the occasion. The
headstone was repaired and placed in the garden at the cemetery. The
exact burial site remains a mystery. A plaque was placed next to the
headstone stating:
Ellen Brayley lies in a grave
Only known to God
Her
descendants in Australia & United States
Thank
her for the gift of life.
The family
also visited Harcourt Station which was Tartna Point on Tolarno Station
downstream from Menindee. Ellen was 20 years old when she died at Tartna
Point and left two very small children. I believe she was brought home
to Menindee and buried near the Ah Chungs Bakery in her parent’s
backyard. They owned land there. The headstone was found nearby in
pieces many years later. Photographs of her and her headstone as it
originally was, were traced and they were put on her headstone. Ellen’s
husband left Menindee and later married again and had six more children.
The second family did not know that the first family existed until
family members started researching. The photographs and Ellen’s Death
Certificate was found in an old case which William E left when he died
in Brewarrina in 1935 and had previously never been opened by the
family. It is thought that Ellen’s parents reared her children.
This
Dedication Plaque was also put on the Cairn.
