Snow Surveying
(New pics updated Oct 04)
Snow surveying involves snow coring and conducting weight analysis of the snow sample. This is done over a thousand yard (yes yards!) traverse at a number of defined locations within the traverse. Snow depth, snow density and water content of the snow pack are calculated from these samples.
You may have noticed I said yards - well the gear used is based on USGS methodology and things are measured in inches and yards and what is even more confusing is that the weight of the snow is measured in inches - you work that one out!
The following are updated shots of various snow activities over winter 04.
