Eastern Suburbs Railway for BVE

Updated version now available! See bottom of the page

Here is my model of the Eastern Suburbs Railway for BVE.

The Eastern Suburbs Railway is a part of the CityRail network in Sydney. Opened in 1979 after some 30 years or more of stop start construction, it connected the densely populated Eastern Suburbs with the main suburban network. It consists of seven stations over an 11 kilometre distance from Bondi Junction in the east to the junction with the Illawarra line at Erskineville. It includes the abandoned Woollhara station which was never finished due to budget blowouts or to the protests of the local residents depending on which political spin you wish to accept.

I have used the official curve and gradient diagrams and placed the signals as accurately as BVE seems to allow. I have spent about six months on and off building the ESR but now that Microsoft Train Simulator is available I have no desire to continue putting effort into BVE. In order to get this railway finished I've slackened off on detail and accuracy in the last week or so but hopefully it will give users a reasonable impression of the prototype.

INSTALLATION

This route will only work in BVE 2.

1. Unzip the ESR.zip file into the BVE/railway/route folder.
2. Unzip the file bondi.zip into the BVE/railway/object/bondi folder
3. Unzip the file bondiwavs.zip into the BVE/sound folder
4. Unzip the 119.zip file into the BVE/train/119 folder

I have used the 119 train from the Japanese routes which is a reasonable approximation of a Cityrail electric train. If you already have that train in your directory you can use that but I have changed some of the wav files in the version available for download here.

This route is very graphics intensive and I do not know how it runs on a slower computer. I get 30fps all the time on my 1ghz Geforce2 256mb but lesser spec machines may struggle. It is also best to have distance set to maximum or else some holes may appear in the scenery and skyscrapers might pop out of the ground without notice!

Here are the files to download -
ESR.zip 41kb
bondi.zip 3.2mb
bondiwavs.zip 1.8mb
119.zip 1.06mb

Some video cards have problems with the catenary at the end of the route. It shows as a black rectangle rather than a transparent graphic. To fix that problem replace the file catenary.bmp in the objects folder with this file -

catenary.zip 1kb

Version 2 by Stephen Cross

Stephen Cross has done extensive work on updating the original route with smoother trackwork, improved signalling and modifications to some station lengths. He has also created an authentic Cityrail S-set which is available to download from his website.

Here are the new files to add -

Unzip bondi_obj.zip 3.3mb
into the objects folder overwriting previous files.

Unzip bondi_snd.zip 1.8mb
into the same objects folder

UnzipESR_v2.zip 9kb
into the route folder
