Just a few Statistics On these Wonderful Creatures
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES:
Tigers are the largest members of the cat or feline family. Of all the subspecies of tigers,
the Siberian tiger is the largest. The smallest of the subspecies is the Sumatran. Females
tend to be smaller in comparison with the males of each subspecies.
Tigers have round pupils with irises that are yellow. Of course there is an exception made
when it comes to the white tigers whose irises are blue. Tigers are capable of seeing color
just like you and I. At night, tigers are able to see six (6) times better than humans!!! Isn't
that just awesome?
The subspecies of tigers differ in many ways. Some of these ways are size, character, and the
markings on their coats. The coats differ both by intensity of their stripes and by the actual
stripes themselves. A tiger's stripe pattern is much like our fingerprint, there are no two
stripe patterns that are alike. Tigers that live in tropical forests tend to have darker, more
dense stripes than those tigers who reside on grasslands. And those who live on the grasslands,
have darker, more dense stripes than those who live in the northern forest areas.
HABITAT:
The homeland of the tiger is the continent of Asia. Tigers are not native to any other
continent. Wanting to be hidden, they prefer damp, thickly overgrown places, like jungles,
river banks covered with reeds or brush, or areas with tall grasses. This allows them to be
camouflaged in their enviroment and well hidden from their prey. Unlike most felidaes, tigers
love water and are very agile swimmers! Tigers tend to stay close to the areas in their territory
that have water. During the dry season, when it gets very hot, they will lie in pools of water
to stay cool. Did you know?? Tigers enter the water backwards in order to keep a watchful eye
on their surroundings.
