Tango & Anarchy:
Anarcotango Manifesto:
Here is a summary of AnarcoTango manifesto: 1. Do not reserve a
table prior to the milonga.. is too bourgeois!
2. Do not divulge the
identity of the dancers... is also typically bourgeois! Is a shame
that some people dance just to be looked at like an object. So next
time wear a mask!
3. Try not to
remember the steps... is just too conservative to copy and paste
steps instead of creating your own and then forget them straight
away.
4. Do not memorize the
name of the orquestas... otherwise, you'll become a 'Tango nerd' 5.
Do not follow the tempo... are you such a submissive person that
needs music help to take a step? Just forget about the music and
express your emotions
5. Do not be selective
when you choose someone to dance... otherwise you'll end up looking
someone you like, then a dance, a chat, a drink, getting together
the next day and so on, until you reach the pathetic comfy life of a
typical family! Instead, stand near the dance floor and shout: Shall
we dance anybody!? and hope for the best: young, old, ugly, pretty,
fat or hairy. That's a real anarchist attitude.

Is it really a 'Tango' Car?
Daring, full of vital energy
and sporting intensity, the SEAT Tango
conveys emotions beyond the impact of technological advances. With
this two-SEATer, to be unveiled at the Frankfurt International Motor
Show, the SEAT Technical Centre has evoked the spirit of sporty 50s
and 60s convertibles through the use of pure, no compromise, design.
The result is a thriller whether it's being driven gently or its
incredible potential is being fully exploited. Tango has been
conceived as a genuine spider - open, minimalist, essential in every
detail. It features expressive and innovative solutions based on a
structure in which the chassis, body, passenger compartment, engine
and structural elements merge to form a whole.

Who was Malena in
Tango? (By
Alberto Paz): Elena Tortolero, the daughter of natives from
Andalucia in Spain, was born in Argentina but grew up in Brazil
because her father was named to head the Spanish diplomatic office
in Porto Alegre. She acquired a highly polished bilingual education
in Spanish and Portuguese and she also developed a natural
inclination for singing internationally popular songs. She became a
professional singer, known as Helena de Toledo. Porto Alegre, being
the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, shares many regional melodies that
are close to the Argentine tunes heard on the other side of the
border. So it wasn't strange that Helena introduced the Tango to her
repertoire. Homero Manzi (1907-1951), a fine Argentine poet who
seldom left the boundaries of the Argentine soil, had visited
several Latin American countries to attend conferences and give
lectures on one of his favorite subjects: nationalism and the rights
of authors and composers to protect their intellectual work. Making
a stop in Brazil, Manzi happened to be one night in the audience of
a night club where he heard Helena sing. Far from Buenos Aires,
Manzi was inspired by the emotional discovery of the music of Buenos
Aires in a foreign environment. The unusual physical and spiritual
authenticity of Helena’s delivery touched him. On the trip back to
Buenos Aires he jotted down the verses describing Helena, whom he
had renamed Malena. It is in Mexico where Helena first heard "her
Tango" and found out about the circumstances that provoked its
creation. The legend says that, feeling overwhelmed by the image
cast from the verses, Helena decided to give up singing. So "Malena"
became Elena Tortolero de Salinas. Eventually she and her husband
returned to Buenos Aires where they set up residence. but in 1959 on
a business trip to the Republic Oriental of Uruguay, Elena passed
away. Close friends affirm that she never laid claims to being the
Malena of the Tango. She was a woman that Buenos Aires got to know
as a common human being, with a name and surname alien to the simple
name that poet Homero Manzi gave her to transform her, in a moment
of inspiration, into a melodic princess on peoples’ lips. People
never knew nor will ever know how she sang.

The Northern
Club offers a Tango evening!
After running for a
long time only beginners classes, we are very pleased to now being
able to offer a supervised Tango practica to advanced tango dancers.
The practica will be supervised by Carmencita and Wei, who will show
us more advanced tango movements, which we can then practice
together. The Northern Club has kindly offered their inviting space
– an aristocratic home like venue has a very pleasant bar with
leather lounges, wood fire, Tango music, great floor and much more.
The practicas are every Wednesday at 7PM at the Northern Club
@ 5/61 Cameron Street, Launceston. There is no fee for the practica.
Instead we ask you to purchase drinks and food from the Northern
Club as return for allowing us to use their space. Please note that
Wednesday evening supervised practica is by invitation only to
ensure maximum benefit for more advanced dancers.
