Backstory
Growing up in Durrover, the threat of invasion from Calastia was ever present. There were terrible rumours of foul deeds by the Black Dragon's agents, but Aravin had never seen anything first hand. So at age 16, when Corean first called to Aravin, he chose not to listen. He did not want the responsibility, and after all, what could he do against a faceless evil? It seemed easier to just try and forget the call altogether.
Instead he chose love specifically a young Elven maid named Lysel. He married her when he was only 20. Lysel, soon fell pregnant and gave birth to twin girls. His wife and daughters were everything to Aravin, and focusing on his young family, he tried to forget the call.
Try as he might to ignore evil, evil did not ignore him. Upon arriving home one evening, Aravin found a ransom note nailed to his door. The note claimed that his wife and daughters were being held captive and that he was to deliver 1000 gold pieces for each of them to a warehouse in the central district of Durrover. The note threatened that he was being watched, and that his family would be killed if he told anyone of this.
Sick with worry, Aravin went alone to the warehouse. He could not possibly have gathered such money, but believed with his family threatened, his sword and rage fuelled determination would be enough.
He was met by a gang of thugs, their leader dressed as a Durrover militia constable - a balding human male with a long scar down his left cheek. When he realised Aravin intended to free his family by force, he ordered the captives killed and he used magic to paralyse Aravin while he made good his escape.
Forced to watch his family murdered, and powerless to move, Aravin drowned in his grief. He turned to drinking, and became violent - particularly toward any militia he came across. He was reprimanded, and incarcerated several times, but failed to learn his lesson.
On one such drunken stupor, he belligerently lashed out at a passing militia patrol. Fortunately a nearby priest managed to intervene and calm Aravin before he could do any harm. The priest dragged him back to the church and let him sleep off the alcohol on a pew.
It was that night that Aravin once again heard Corean's call. Corean appeared before him in his dreams. Burdened by his misery, and ashamed at not heeding the call some ten years ago, Aravin fell weeping to the ground, and would not dare raise his eyes to meet the god's gaze. Corean spoke:
"The light still seeks you Aravin. There is so much need, and yet so few who would stand against the darkness. Heed my call - rise and find within yourself the power to protect the innocent, and punish evil."
At that moment, Aravin awoke in the church, as dawn's first light streamed through the stained glass window, illuminating Corean in brilliance. From that day forward, he has chosen the path Corean offered. He began his training and slowly rebuilt his shattered life.
After making amends with the local authorities, he worked with them to try and bring the criminals responsible for his family's death to justice. He learned that leader of the gang was a wanted Calastian spy known only as Viklas. However there were no leads, and the militia had long since closed the case.
Aravin spent long months trying to uncover new evidence, or find some clue about the gang's whereabouts, however never made any real progress. And with his training nearly complete, Aravin found there was more and more work at hand bringing criminals to justice.
Once his training was completed, he decided to journey to Mithril, on a pilgrimage to seek Corean's wisdom. Perhaps there Corean may answer his prayer and send him some sign of Viklas' whereabouts so that justice might finally be served.

DM Addition
In his travels to Mullis Town, across the vast lands of Ghelspad, Aravin has heard many a great story. From the most evil of denizens that seek to restore the Titans to the greatest of heroes who stand against such foes. He has heard tales of steadfast dwarves in Burok Torn who stand strong against the Calastian armies and of the mysterious city of Hollowfaust where it is said, the undead mingle with the living as if it be the norm. He has heard whispers of the Black Guard who fight in Chardun's name as he himself fights in the name of Corean and listened to accounts of villages destroyed by hordes of Vangal's Horsemen. It is a strange and uneasy dichotomy. This world where a Paladin of Corean would uphold all that is lawful and good but still pay respect to the pure chaos and evil that is Vangal. It is the conundrum of a land scarred by immortal war. Aravin must stay true though and perhaps Corean will reward his disicpline and faith with a chance to serve in some greater way. Many tales of heroes told of the Harriers of Uria and the Valravens of Mithril - Aireal Cavaliers riding great birds of prey. And of the Knights. Iron Knights - masters of warefare, Silver Knights - enemies of evil outsiders, Gold Knights - Paladins of healing and protection, and the Mithril Knights - the most elite of Corean's Paladins, best of the best and led by Barconius himself. Perhaps with time, Aravin can develop into such a hero!
