WORLD WIDE SEAFOOD SHORTAGE BY 2010
Despite massive improvements in aquaculture and stable commercial catches, 2010 could see demand for seafood out-pace supply by 10-40million tonnes, Seafood Trend Newsletter reports.
The FAO estimates that demand for seafood in 2010 will be 110-120 million tonnes. In 1996 worldwide seafood production (30% of which came from Aquaculture) stood at 90 million tonnes. With wild fisheries leveling off during the past 10 years, growth in seafood production has almost come almost completely from Aquaculture Seafood Trend reports.
The FAO says fishing capacity would have to be cut by 30% by limiting access to fish, reducing state subsidies and controlling off-shore fleets, amongst other things. This would allow 60-70% of world fish stocks in trouble to rebuild for future harvest.
