GOAT MANAGEMENT FOR JULY

July is traditionally a quiet month in the management of Goats but some jobs may need to be finalized. The winter months are the hardest time for Goats as they try to keep themselves warm and away from the cold winds and rain. Goats can normally cope with rain or wind but a combination of both can be a disaster so if you can supply shelter from the wind the better they will do.

Although there is no marketing benefit in dropping kids early at present in WA, if you do then you will need to be extra cautious with your breeders during these colder months of June, July and August.

Following are a few jobs which if haven't been done can be finalized:

·Vaccination booster along with a drench for internal parasites and a lice treatment will clean up any problems before your Does start kidding.

·Keep up the mineral supplements in either block, loose mix or drench form.

·If there is no roughage in the paddock put out hay in preferably a dry state.

·Angoras may need crutching and wigging so as to keep their valuable fleece clean until shearing.

·Pregnant Does due in the next month need to be kept in good condition, so if the paddock feed is short you will need to supplement with some extras such as hay or grain.

·Predator control for especially foxes needs to be stepped up if you use baits. You will need to get your neighbours assistance for better results.

RANGELAND MARKETING CONTACTS

From the feed back received regarding the articles on Rangeland Goats over the last few weeks there seems to be a lack of knowledge in what is required to both get into them and manage them in the agricultural areas. Remember to keep it simple.

We at Elders can help you market your Rangelands if you are in the pastoral areas or source Rangeland breeders if you are in the agricultural areas and wish to get started into breeding or resale. We have the following staff situated in the main Goat areas of the state who are only too happy to help:
