JOHNES DISEASE INFORMATION SEMINAR

Mohair Australia (WA Division) in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture invites Goat breeders and others interested in finding out more on this problem disease to an information session at the Gidgegannup Agricultural Hall on Saturday 21st June at 1.30pm.

WA is declared a Free Zone for JD. Over the past few years there have been two detections of OJD in Goat herds in WA.

Many Goat breeders are unaware of the causes of JD/bovine JD and how it is managed in different parts of Australia.

At this meeting you will hear about JD, how it may affect your farming enterprise, and what can be done to prevent further out breaks.

Speakers will include Peter Morcombe, State JD Coordinator and Topics will include JD epidemiology, zones, interstate entry conditions, surveillance, testing, vaccination and management of detections and Biosecurity. The Department of Agriculture recently produced a Biosecurity Plan for diseases that can affect goats, sheep, alpacas, deer and cattle.

A few questions which need to be clarified and hopefully will be at this information day are:

·Why is Johnes Disease seen to be such a problem?

·Why the vaccination, which is available, cannot be used to control the problem?

·Why is it so hard to detect, as both animals, which have been detected, have both come from the Eastern States and were supposedly tested?

·Although both these animals were running in WA for a period it is apparent that they have not shed or passed on this disease to others?

·Does climatic conditions have something to do with the spread of JD?
