Breeding for profit with the aid of technology.

Successful stock selection requires the use of all known information in the selection process.Contemporary breeding generally relies on observable and measurable characteristics of an animal and does not consider the genetic potential that is inherent within the individual.

With the recent establishment ofDNA tests on the way for WA; DNA testing service set up in WA, opportunities to unlock the genetic potential of animals has emerged.Analogous to the architect’s plan for a building, DNA is the blueprint that contains the design, which is ultimately reflected in the individuality of an animal.

DNA testing offers a wide range of practical solutions on the farm. For example, theisDNA information provides very accurate pedigree information and overcomes mistakes from mis-mothering.The technology is an excellent tool for determining parentage and ultimately perpetuating specific bloodlines with the desired production trait.

Local cattle and sheep farmers have used DNA testing to match sires to progeny in multi-sire breeding programs. Some producers have extended the use of this simple application to identify sires that throw undesirable traits and animals that are under-performing.

New DNA test service for WA.

Testing requires the collection of a sample of blood, semen or tissue.DNA is recovered from the sample and is used for testing. The collection process can be simplified if it is combined with routine farm operations, such as during drenching, shearing or mulesing.

The company is committed to adding value through the direct involvement of local producers. In order for DNA to be incorporated into routine farming, it has to be customized to specific requirements so as to provide relevant outcomes. The local service in WA was established with pragmatic solutions in mind.Local producers would have access to local expertise over the phone or one site at the farm.

To date, DNA tests for sheep, cattle, horse and goats have been performed.Eventually the service will be extended to crops other animals such as alpacaspigs and dogs.

Dr Guan Tay who also runs a Boer Goat Stud as well as a commercial Capretto flock here in WA submitted this article. For more information on the application of DNA testingcontact him atAgri-Biotech Pty Ltd on 0429 43 63 43."
