WE SAIL

At MYC, you can be sure of finding a class of boat which will suit your style of dinghy sailing.  All classes can be raced, either in their own class or in a mixed handicap fleet.  Boat storage facilities are available for your own boat.  We have at least one club boat available in each of the classes listed below for prospective members who would like to see which class will suit their needs.

Hartley TS16

Lasers Minnows Mirrors Moths

The Hartley TS16 is the most popular trailer sailer in Australia.

It is a clean lined, unsinkable conventional trailer yacht with performance and versatility proven over more than 30 years.

It is light, easy to rig, launch and retrieve and can be towed comfortably by a four cylinder car.

The Laser is a strict one design single-handed sailing dinghy that has a choice of rig sizes (standard, radial and 4.7) designed to suit the size of the sailor.

The Laser class was designed around the  philosophy that the sailor wins the race, not the boat.

Laser racing is, therefore a true test of skill rather than craft.

The Minnow is a strictly one design class which provides an affordable entry to sailing for juniors from about 8 to 14 years old (depending upon their size and weight).

The craft uses an easy-to-build ply construction. This approach is particularly attractive to many sailing families and clubs.

The Minnow provides a good next step for juniors who have successfully completed our certified Yachting Australia training courses and would like to try single-handed sailing.

The Mirror provides affordable sailing enjoyment for the whole family, often with crews of a parent and child or two siblings.

The Mirror is used at MYC as the class for our certified Yachting Australia training courses.

Crews gain the knowledge and support of each other in this stable boat and begin to learn the importance of teamwork when they are the skipper or crew.

The International Moth is an eleven foot, high performance, single handed racing dinghy.

As a development class, the class rules give the designer and builder the fullest liberty in design and construction to develop and produce faster boats.

The class has very few design rules and therefore encourages innovation in design as much as it does sailing skill.

Other Classes

As well as the classes shown above, we also have sailors race other dinghy classes in our Mixed Fleet on Sunday afternoons.  This has included Herons and Pacers.  So if you have a different class of dinghy and would like to race at our club then you can compete in our Mixed Fleet with a variety of classes on a handicap system.

MYC is also the home of the Mudlark, a class of boat for juniors designed and first built by a previous MYC Commodore, Wally Gaunt, father of our current Patron, Terry Gaunt.
