Nick Burningham's Research

Traditional Southeast Asian Sailing Craft

I've sailed and owned a number of traditional Southeast Asian (mainly Indonesian) sailing vessels, and also undertaken formal research on Indonesian watercraft which has been published in a number of academic journals and popular magazines.

The largest vessel I've owned (in partnership with Dan Dwyer) was
a perahu lambo named "Hati Senang".

She was built on the small island of Bonerate, but the construction was managed by Haji Syukriwhose family are noted perahu lambo operators from a much smaller island called Jinato.

Nearly all the perahu lambo owned by Haji Syukri, his father and his brothers have names containing the word "Hati".

Hati Bulat was widely considered the fastest of the fleet

"Hati" means "liver", but like "heart" in English it carries the connotation of being the source, or centre, of emotions. "Hati Senang" could be translated "Contented Heart".
