Hsu Fu was a giant bamboo raft built for Tim Severin's "China Voyage" across the Pacific from China to America. The pic shows her fitting out at Hai Long and trying out the long sweep oars.
I supervised the construction of Hsu Fu at the village of Sam Son, in Thanh Hoa, northern Vietnam, where large sailing rafts were traditionally constructed for fishing. Working at Samson was interesting, the raft builders were terrific to work with, but Sam Son was not comfortable and very little fun.
