Ritual Fragments was commissioned by the Festival of Perth for a collaborative season bringing together choregrapher Mallika Sarabhai and composer David Pye. The work was performed by Nova and the Darpana Academy of Dance from India and followed in the program immediately after Roger Smalley's Ceremony 1, a highly ritualistic work for percussion quartet commissioned by Nova in 1988.
