The Software.
Of course, having the ultimate hardware means
nothing if you've not got the software to make use of it. These days on
any home computer, there is one piece of software that, unfortunately,
no one can do without and that is Windows 95. Everything else stems from
that all important and popular (popularity through lack of other options,
not through choice) operating system. Every single game that you can get
for the computer these days is made playable on this OS simply because
it's almost the only one out there. Although there are others out there,
people who use these alternatives make sure that their choice of OS is
compatible with Win95. It might be sad, but if you were Bill Gates, you
wouldn't think so.
Then come the extra things - the things you
actually want the computer for. These come in hundreds of different shapes
and sizes. From the word processor (most commonly "Word") to the super
complex statistical analysing packages that are used to determine weather
patterns and the like, software is essential if you want your computer
to actually do anything. I think that one of the most important
types of software is gaming software. For links to everything there
is to know about games, go to my links
pages.
Computers need constantly updating and so does
software. Companies are all the time releasing improvements to make their
programs do their things even more efficiently. One of the great things
about the internet is that people can make these updates freely available
and ready to download and add on to the original program. Perhaps the
most important site to visit for such patches is Microsoft's
site. Here you will find programs and other goodies that will improve the
performance of your Win95 system and let you do even more than before.
Other freely downloadable resources on the
internet are fonts. I thought that I was pretty full bottle on fonts when
I found that I had managed to collect over two hundred before I even got
Win95. Then I got on the internet and discovered that there were sites
offering more than twice that amount for free download. One of the sites
that I found that I like the best is Larbie's
Fonts page. I like the style of the fonts there (reminiscent of Designers
Republic) and I thought that the site its self was extremely well made
and presented.
