Backup your drivers
Should you
have to reinstall Windows you should have a backup of all your
third party drivers as well as Windows’s own. A great tool is
Windriverbackup from www.jermar.com
which will do this task admirably.
To keep your computer running at its best good housekeeping
is essential. As in most things prevention is far better than
a cure.
Clean up your hard disk
Remove
all the unwanted and junk files with this very
intuitive
and powerful software available from www.adwt.com/pc/downloads.htm.
When I first tested this software I was somewhat astounded to
find I could clear several hundred megabytes of disk space despite
considering myself a fairly good PC housekeeper. Just bookmark
this site as some
of the other programs following in this article are also available
from here.
Alternatively
you may wish to use Cleanup V3 from
www.stevengould.org
for this purpose.
Defrag the hard disk
Having cleaned
your disk it is now time to optimise disk usage and maximise
contiguous space. Not only does this allow programs to run faster
but it also assits Windows which
uses as much of your hard disk as possible for memory which
is called the swap file. Windows has its own utility but by
far a better solution is Diskeeper Lite from www.execsoft.com.
They designed the original Microsoft tool but then a lovers
tiff
got in the way and this little much improved gem is now marketed
individually. If the defraging process is interupted unexplicitly
it probably means you have background task running which you
are unaware of. The solution is simple. If the free version

Enditall
Install this
great utility and you will be amazed how much is going on silently
in the back ground. Download Enditall2 from http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/.
Simple to use and very effective giving you no more interuptions
when defraging or running Chldisk. Now that your files are in
good shape let’s keep them that way by using the following great
tools.
Registry Clean Up
It is a
good idea to remove useless garbage left by some programs in
the Registry. A nice tool which does this for you and invariably
makes your copmputer run faster is Esycleaner from www.toniarts.com/
which again is free.
Another tried registry tool RegSeeker is available from Hoverdesk in their freeware section.
Deleted File recovery
Disaster can and does strike. Have you just lost your files or has a virus damaged your system. Regardless of where the deleted files may have gone this simple but powerful utility will get them back.
There are many such systems which may have greater features but as a first and FREE step it is hard to go past Handy Recovery from www.handyrecovery.com/download.shtml.
A very nice and essential tool when disaster strikes.
