Review: Diamond Island Resort, Bicheno, Australia

When they invented the phrase “getting away from it all”, they may have had Diamond Island Resort in mind. Located on Tasmania’s east coast in the pleasant holiday town of Bicheno, its apartments and spacious grounds would suit either a romantic getaway or a family holiday.

The apartments are decorated in contemporary style, with timber kitchen flooring and a carpeted living room and bedroom. Some apartments have a studio-style set-up with a connecting bedroom and lounge, while others have two rooms and can house up to four people. Bathrooms are light and airy, and some come equipped with spa baths.

All the apartments have impressive views toward a broad grassy area and the ocean beyond. There are good swimming beaches at Bicheno; but if the weather’s cool, there are also entertainment facilities and a restaurant in the resort’s main building.

The prime attraction in Bicheno is the nightly penguin tour, which starts from just below the resort. Each night, hundreds of penguins waddle out of the sea past onlookers’ feet on the way to their burrows. Further south is the Freycinet Peninsula and the natural attractions of Freycinet National Park.
