Belmont, Benalla, Australia
Benalla’s sleepy Arundel Street was not without its share of excitement in the past – it was once the temporary residence of Ned Kelly, locked up in a cell at the back of the still extant courthouse building. Nowadays it’s a more peaceful thoroughfare, and also contains the restored 19th century residence Belmont. The shared lounge, which connects to the breakfast room, is tastefully set out with comfortable seating, flower arrangements, a piano, a massive fireplace, and a generous selection of CDs, books and games. To add to the attractions, there’s a spa out the back. Belmont is handy to the town centre, being an easy walk from restaurants and shops. It’s even closer to Benalla’s attractive Botanical Gardens and art gallery, whose cafe commands an impressive river view. And just across the river you can learn more about the Kelly’s bushranging exploits at the local museum. Tim Richards was a guest of Tourism Victoria. Just the Facts: Belmont
