Lonely Planet TV: Shanghai Snapshot
www.lonelyplanet.tv, July 2009

I walk the streets of the Old Town district of the Chinese city, and shop for some odd souvenirs.

In This Corner... the Hero of Waterloo!
Australian Traveller, June 2009

"The most ancient part of Sydney, The Rocks, is seething with historic old drinking houses (some with historic old drinkers), but which is the oldest Sydney pub still standing? Initial research provides a shortlist of four that could possibly claim the title; in fact, two of them do positively lay claim to it. So, fired with curiosity, I’m off on a pub crawl through The Rocks and its sister suburb, Millers Point."

I adjudicate the thorny question of which establishment can claim the title of Sydney's oldest pub.

Crafty Escape
The Age, 20 June 2009

"Where to next? I’m standing high on a slope, and the walking track I’ve been following is blocked by fallen trees. This sort of thing happens every time I visit Olinda. Having left the concrete jungle, I get excited by the prospect of bushwalking, neglect to obtain a proper map and end up on a walk that’s more difficult than I’d expected. But the good thing about this national park is that you’re never far from a craft shop."

A guide to the town of Olinda, in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne.

Art for Thought's Sake on a Pub Wall
The Age, 16 May 2009

"Though the satirical illustration has been around since the 18th century, and the cartoon is still a fixture on newspapers' editorial pages, they've had a bumpy transition to the Internet, where users click to specific stories rather than view entire pages. Enter a new medium - the wall of a popular inner-city music venue. But why decide to feature cartoon and comic strip art in the first place?"

Talking to the creators of Strip Billboard, a street art project in Melbourne, Australia.
Available for republication (print only).

The Secrets of Inner Sydney
The West Australian, 14 May 2009

"From 1970 to 1973, a lively artists’ colony was firmly established at 59 Macleay Street, in what became known as the Yellow House. Every surface was painted over, the place was humming with artists and those who wanted to see their art, and cabarets, theatre and film screenings took place. If Austin Powers had dropped in, he would’ve declared it a 'swinging shindig'."

Uncovering hidden gems in the inner suburbs of Sydney, Australia.

The Pie Lady of Gdansk
Your Life Choices, May 2009

"I meet Beata Zielinska at the Willa Lubicz, a charming 1930s hotel on a hill in Gdynia, an industrial port city just north of Gdansk. She’s a neatly turned out middle-aged blonde in a fur-lined coat and jeans, holding a big, practical-looking gold handbag. As she sits at one of the genteel hotel’s cafe tables and orders coffee while an espresso machine hisses loudly behind her, she explains why the paj."

The reverse migration experience of a woman who manufactures Australian pies in Poland.

The Grape Escape
Medical Observer, 1 May 2009

"I’m fortunate to arrive at the lake as the sun is about to set. There’s no traffic on the water this time of day, so its surface is almost still, rippling slightly as a cool breeze blows into the town. Aside from a few pink-tinged clouds, there’s a clear sky, and as it fills with the orange glow of the disappearing sun I feel myself starting to relax."

Enjoying the wineries and natural attractions of Nagambie, Victoria.

Sale of the Century
Jetstar Magazine, May 2009

"Global financial crisis? What crisis? It’s true that the world’s economies are going through some serious tremors; but for the first home buyer in Australia, there’s never been a better time to purchase a home. Interest rates are down, the first home owner grant is up, and outside the state capitals there are many affordable new housing developments on offer."

Examining new apartment developments in regional Australia.
Available for republication (print and Web).

Mind the Gap: A tale of parallel worlds, Egyptology, ancient prophecy, malevolent felines... and underground railway stations.
April 2009

"Darius stepped away from the crack in the floor, now visibly expanding and contracting like a hungry mouth. He looked away from the sphere and caught Kovary’s eye. She appeared as mystified as he. Then, turning back, he saw that something was forming slowly within the golden light. It was vaguely humanoid, though it was almost three metres tall. There was something… animal… about the shape of its head."

My SF/fantasy thriller novel, Mind the Gap, was published in 2009 and is available for purchase on Amazon.com. For more details, visit the book's promotional website.

High and Mighty
Medical Observer, 24 April 2009

"There's an odd mood of exhilaration in the air; I think, like me, everyone is thinking how improbable this all is, that human beings shouldn't be this high up from the earth, and certainly not sipping alcoholic beverages while doing so. We’re all braced by the strange mix of material comforts and an underlying sense of danger. I want at the same time to shout out 'Aren't we clever?' and 'Aren't we crazy?'"

Scaling the peaks and spas of the Tatra Mountains in Slovakia.

24 Hours in Warsaw
The Age & The Sydney Morning Herald
18 April 2009

"The result is an intriguing blend, a core of beautifully restored classical buildings against the backdrop of overwhelming concrete structures from the communist years. As the nation’s business hub, Warsaw has a wide array of dining and entertainment options, from medieval cellar restaurants to cutting-edge nightclubs."

Spending a day exploring the attractions of Poland's capital city.

Fremantle Concocters
Herald Sun, 17 April 2009

"The combination of the narrow roadway, the al fresco seating, and the heritage facades with their first floor balconies, makes for an intensely atmospheric street - particularly on a sunny afternoon when the Fremantle Doctor, the dependable daily sea breeze, is blowing off the Indian Ocean. But coffee isn’t the beverage I’m seeking today."

A journey through the microbreweries of Fremantle, Western Australia.
