 Parkhurst Boys 1842-1862
Stratheden - arrived in TAS in 1845 SOURCES

The 429 ton ship 'Stratheden' left London under the command of Captain John Bruton. She was said to have stopped in at the Isle of Wight on August 3, 1845 where she took on 72 Parkhurst boys bound for Hobart.

They were among the 154 male convicts who were sentenced to transportion. The 'Stratheden' arrived in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) on December 25, 1845 and 103 of her convicts, including the 72 Parkhurst boys, disembarked. The ship continued on to the Port Phillip Settlement (Victoria) and disembarked her remaining 51 convicts after she arrived on January 27, 1846.

Ian Nicholson's 'Log of Logs' indicates that Henry Baker's surgeon's journal for the voyage is preserved in the Public Record Office in England and is on the 'Australian Joint Copying Project' film no. 3210.

The Parkhurst Boys are listed in Paul Buddee's book, 'Fate of the Artful Dodger' and in his research notes which were deposited in the Battye Library, Perth, some time later.

The 30 'ticket-of-leave', 21 '3rd-class' and 21 '4th-class' boys who were transported on the 'Stratheden' are transcribed below.
