  Club History

South Burnett Speedway Club Inc. was formed on the 14th September 1968. The committee at the time consisted of Col McBride as President, Jim Devitt as Vice President, and Jim Hayne as both Treasurer and Secretary. The Club had over 100 members in its first year it was formed, and racing began at the Kingaroy Showgrounds.

A few well-known drivers from the club of the time were: Keith and Barry Harm, Kev and Wayne Barkle, Darryl Retchlag, Howard Fiedler, and Cobby Nielsen. Let's not forget Trevor Campbell, who had the lap record in his FJ Holden right up until the fence was replaced and the circuit was extended.

The original fence was made out of wood, and after many years of racing the fence was deemed to be unsafe. It was then replaced with the new ¼ inch steel plate, which we still race by today. The lighting facility has also been upgraded to one of the best in the state at the time. Over the years, other facilities such as a new control tower and food canteen were erected, as well as the old seating being pulled down and replaced with new stands.

The club has experienced a lot of highs since its commencement. The long list includes the running of the "Ivan Major's World Series International Bike Test" in the 80's, which was a huge success for the club. Then there was the "Australia verses America Super Sedan Test" in December 1998, which was standing room only around the Kingaroy Circuit. The South Burnett Speedway Club has also hosted many Queensland Titles for Modified Production, Super Street Sedans, and Street Sedans. This year, we have the opportunity to host our very first Junior Queensland Title.

Over the years, our club has produced many talented drivers including Brett Barron winning back-to-back Queensland Street Sedan Titles, Craig Harm and Chris Kidd also winning Queensland Street Sedan Titles,  and Jamie Harmsworth from Wondai taking out a Queensland Super Street Sedan Title. David Barbeler has been runner up twice, and a third place at the Queensland Super Street Titles. Cameron Busiko from Yarraman has also been victorious with a Queensland Street Sedan Title, and runner-up for a Queensland Super Street Title.

Since the club began in 1968, there has been a lot club members and drivers coming and going. To this date, Life Members for the club are Ivan and Margaret Geritz, and Keith and Shirley Harm. Some other dedicated club members who have played a large role in the running of the club are the Barbeler's , the Barron's , the Harm's, the Geritz's, and the Baldwin's - just to name a few. These dedicated members have been involved with speedway for over 20 years, and have put in endless hours of work building the club to what it is today.
