Daughter of James Keeling and Sarah Dimock, Martha was born on 14th August 1793 at Hanley in Staffordshire, she married Ridgeway Newland on 13th March 1827 after the death of his first wife, Jane Sophia Benning.

In 1839 Martha Newland, along with her husband, six children, two step-children, mother and two sisters, migrated to South Australia on the ship Sir Charles Forbes.

Martha was a classical, Hebrew and French scholar. She educated the younger members of her own family and formed a Night School at Yelkie, devoting much of her time to the education of the children of the settlement at what later became Victor Harbour where the family settled, along with about 20 members of their congregation from Hanley, The Potteries, Staffordshire..
