Boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
Cool and add:-
1½ lbs flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons bicarb soda
2 teaspoons allspice
4 teaspoons ground ginger
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
Bake in two loaf tins at 350ºF (180ºC) for 1½ hours.
Serve sliced and buttered.
Freezes well.
